Critics writing for the outlet Fox News insist that the new, “woke” Hollywood remakes coming to market “deserve to fail.”
The topic of the “woke agenda” has been hot for months now. Audiences have remained divided on whether studios in Hollywood are unnecessarily pandering to a woke audience or if they’re truly representing diverse viewership and acting to create a more inclusive industry.
Hollywood Studios, Including Disney, Announce Remakes of Classics; Critics Unimpressed
One common theme among studios while greenlighting movies for the last few years has been remakes. Be it live-action remakes of animated movies or just plain remakes of some incredibly popular films, many studios have astutely looked to capitalize on old, profitable entertainment properties.
However, many times, these remakes have featured a cast that has differed from the original in some way—think Halle Bailey’s role in The Little Mermaid or the new cast for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Specifically, the cast has featured more diversity.
Many have spoken out against this diversity and have been dubbed racist by fans for doing this. Others have insisted that the studios are simply trying to check boxes for diversity and inclusion for the sake of a “woke” audience.
However, more voices are speaking out, becoming increasingly unimpressed with this state of the industry. Blackish creator Kenya Barris is looking to work on remakes of The Wizard of Oz and It’s a Wonderful Life. Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham, is looking to remake A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
Dan Gainor wrote for Fox News, “Remaking classic characters either by race or gender or sometimes both has become so common in Tinsel Town that it’s almost a cliche…It’s the agenda that is chasing fans from the theater or the TV set. And some of the movies are so ridiculous that they are making international news.”

Gainor concludes his op-ed, stating, “Hollywood creators should try coming up with some original ideas instead. But we all know they won’t.”

The opposite of wokeness is bigotry.
