The path in Hollywood, when you start out in Disney, isn’t always an easy one. Many former Disney stars have made that abundantly clear. From Selena Gomez to Dove Cameron and Demi Lovato, it’s clear that often times a Disney start can come with its baggage. One Disney star who also got her start on Disney recently shared what she’s been thinking about for her future, and the results are absolutely becoming of a Disney Princess.
Auli’i Cravalho is a talented actress and singer from Hawaii. She rose to fame for voicing the lead character Moana in the Disney animated film of the same name in 2016 at the age of 14 years old and has become a role model and inspiration for many since then. Her performance as Moana received critical acclaim, and she was nominated for numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for “How Far I’ll Go.”
Recently, Cravalho spoke with The Cut, about her next steps after debuting as a Disney princess, and as the article phrased it, it’s clear the actress is “embracing her power.”
“I’ve been really searching for a role that I could sink my teeth into.” Cravalho shared. She plays Jos Cleary-Lopez, a teen who “crushes on her skater classmate Ryan (Nico Hiraga), cyberbullies her mom, the mayor of Seattle (Toni Collette)—and discovers she has the ability to produce electricity from her fingertips.”
The upcoming show is based on the book, “The Power,” which is a speculative fiction novel written by Naomi Alderman and published in 2016. The book explores the idea of what would happen if women suddenly gained the ability to generate electrical energy from their bodies, making them physically more powerful than men.
“Sometimes I do worry about what I’m doing with my time. Am I spending it helping my community and making an impact in real life? I’m trying to figure out how to do something of impact.” She shared.
Cravalho is currently filming Mean Girls, a movie adaptation of the stage musical, in New Jersey, in which she plays Janis, the rebellious and open-minded burnout first played by Lizzy Caplan. She will also be the executive producer on the upcoming live-action Moana that the Walt Disney Company announced recently.
