Many Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort rides have closed for refurbishment in the past few months or years, with staggered reopenings so that Disney Guests still have plenty to do (when they’re behaving themselves, that is). Now, a Disneyland Park attraction that has been open since 1959 is closing for refurbishment — and no reopening date has been announced.
The Matterhorn Bobsleds ride in Disneyland’s Fantasyland will be closed starting on August 8. Disneyland has already updated its website to reflect the closure date in the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride’s description and says simply that Guests who are missing the Swiss Alps-inspired attraction should keep checking the ride’s webpage for any updates on its potential return.
On the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride, six people at a time clamber into a bobsled and embark on a chilly, windy adventure on “the Matterhorn”. Passengers must contend with “howling winds,” an 80-foot-high ascension, ice, and a threatening Abominable Snowman!
This alpine ride is a classic roller coaster that Walt Disney designed after becoming enamored with the real Swiss Alps while filming the 1959 movie Third Man on the Mountain.
There are two different routes for the roller coaster: a Fantasyland route and a Tomorrowland route (although sometimes, the thrill ride only has one route that is open to passengers).
The closure of Matterhorn Bobsleds will disappoint many Disneyland fans; there have been so many big changes lately in terms of Disney attractions (including the changes to Splash Mountain) that fans might be hesitant to believe that the ride is actually going to come back. Are you a fan of the Matterhorn Bobsleds thrill ride?
Which do you prefer: Matterhorn Bobsleds or Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain? Matterhorn Bobsleds is closing indefinitely, and Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain just might be closing for a lengthy refurbishment again soon, so you might be out of luck either way!
