While Star Wars fans have gotten a taste of Disneyland’s Hyperspace Mountain for short stints in 2022 and 2023, a whole new level of Imagineering is taking place lightyears away from Anaheim.

A beloved Tokyo Disneyland trademark since 1983, Space Mountain will maintain its original concept of an enclosed coaster, but the updates will be out of this world. In a post by Disney Parks Blog, Walt Disney Imagineering Producer Kathleen Davis said:
I’m thrilled to introduce this attraction to guests. It’s not only a whole new ride experience, but the story also has so much emotion. Through the queue and then on the ride, we see our connection to our planet and gain a new perspective for how special it is in all the universe. It’s a roller coaster with both thrill and heart.
With momentum building behind Disney’s revamped ride and surrounding area, Oriental Land Co., Ltd. announced the renovation had officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 16, 2023. Although the design plans are held close to the vest in proper Disney form, initial concept art depicting Tokyo Disney’s brand-new land has been released.
A Truly a Land of Tomorrow
Although Disney Guests have an affinity for the original Space Mountain and Tomorrowland, a futuristic world dreamed up in the early 1980s could use a few updates.
With this first look at the sleek new structures costing 56 billion yen to create, Disney fans might as well book their 2027 Disney tickets now. With immersive special effects, thrilling drops, and the original charm of Tomorrowland, this is a rebuild that any Disney Guest can get behind.
There’s no closure date for the original Space Mountain in 2024 or opening date for the new Space Mountain in 2027 at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort. While construction is underway, Disney Fanatic will continue to provide updates as the story develops.
