The password-sharing crackdown that streaming services have been enforcing is coming to Disney-owned Hulu soon!

The Walt Disney Company has been taking many steps over the last year to get its act together and clean up the mess the company found itself in at the end of 2022. Now that it’s been over a year since the massive clean-up process began, we are slowly seeing the various pieces fall into place, and the dust is beginning to settle after a major reorganization and restructuring of the company.

Disney Announces Password Sharing Crackdown for Hulu

One of the main sources of stress for the company has been its streaming service mess. Numbers don’t lie, and Disney’s streaming services have cost the Mouse House a lot over the last few years. In order to clean it up, Disney has been undertaking many strategic changes, be it with production or be it distribution.

One of the more seemingly minor changes that will have a notable impact, in the long run, is the change implemented in subscriber behavior: the password-sharing crackdown.

Last year, the company announced that its primary streaming service, Disney+, would be becoming more stringent about password sharing.

Now, similar to Disney+, Hulu will have the same happen.

In an email sent to users (i.e. Hulu subscribers) earlier this week, the company explained that it would start limiting account sharing outside of one’s household beginning March 14, 2024.

Those who have read the subscriber terms and conditions of creating a Hulu account will know that using someone else’s password and email and pretending to be that individual is not allowed. It’s an update that went live in the user agreement on January 25, 2024.

However, none of this news is surprising, as Disney CEO Bob Iger had made his intentions clear with password-sharing last year.

As we previously reported on this matter, Disney is using a staggered approach to the implementation of the crackdown on account sharing. While it’s already begun in some locations (like Canada), it’s also expected to see a delayed start in other locations.
