While working for the Walt Disney Company has made multiple actors’ careers, one rule made it so that one actress’s future prospects were ruined.

Being part of the Disney family, be that through the movies and cinema or through becoming a character performer, like the Disney princess characters, at the Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort, is certainly a great way to kick-start one’s career in entertainment. Especially when it comes to the movie scene, Disney is known to be one of the biggest names in the industry.

However, due to one “asinine” rule from the company, one actress’ career was ruined after starring in a Disney film instead of taking off.

Adriana Caselotti Becomes the First Disney Princess in Cinema

Actress Adriana Caselotti, the voice behind Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is the original Disney princess. Today, the film is iconic and a household name for making history with its production. However, at the time, it ended up leaving one actor in dire straits.

Back in the day, the first-ever Disney animated films were bound to an unconventional rule. Voice actors who featured in these films were not allowed to be credited for their work with the studio. This was all in an effort to “keep the magic alive” from Walt Disney himself.

However, this meant that actors who contributed to the company’s early success did not get to benefit from their contributions. Unfortunately, in the case of Adriana Caselotti, it ruined her career, as ScreenRant reports.

Voice of Snow White—Adriana Caselotti—not only received no credit for her work in Snow White but was also reportedly not allowed to share with anyone that the impressive voice behind Snow White was hers.

There has also been further speculation that Caselotti was even blacklisted by Disney after she gave her voice as Snow White, though no evidence has been provided to back up this claim.

Adriana Caselotti Sues Disney

Ultimately, Caselotti ended up suing Disney for unfair compensation, where both Caselotti and her co-star, the Prince, demanded more money from the Mouse House.

Caselotti was only paid $970 (today, this translates to $20,725.06) despite three years of work on the project. It was clearly not fair compensation for her talents and time. In addition, she was allegedly not invited to the movie premiere and was misled about the scope of the project.

Per a conversation with The New York Times, Caselotti claimed that Disney told her the film would only be a little longer than its normal 10-12 minute shorts, however, this was clearly false as it was an hour and 23 minutes.

The lawsuit, however, was not successful.

This said, perhaps Disney extended an olive branch as Adriana Caselotti was made a Disney Legend in 1994, three years before she died, honoring her in that special Disney way for her work.
