Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler already has a whole host of issues…and now it has another challenge.

When Walt Disney’s brainchild, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was released in 1937, it revolutionized the world of movies and animation at the time. It was the first full-length traditionally animated feature film and the Walt Disney Company’s first animated movie. The movie was even deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress.

However, the movie—despite being months away from theatrical release, with possible delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike—has already been embroiled in controversy after controversy. For starters, Rachel Zegler made fairly disparaging comments about the 1937 version of the movie, which certainly didn’t sit well with fans. Not only that, but reportedly, even the director of the film is unhappy with her.

Now, it appears that the film has one other challenge to surpass. As reported by Screenrant, a poll by the American Film Institute (AFI) named Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the greatest animated movie of all time in 2008. If it were not already evident that the upcoming live-action has big shoes to fill, it’s certainly apparent now.

While Disney has made a business of creating live-action remakes of its old animated successes, not all of the remakes have done well commercially. Films like Peter Pan and Wendy, for example, received terrible reviews from audiences who felt that the movie was the “anti-Peter Pan movie.”

Leave aside the criticism that Zegler faced from many who believed a Latina actress couldn’t play a character named Snow White, her comments stemming from a feminist perspective have certainly not helped her case. Now, with all of this, the film must also live up to the standard of the iconic 1937 original.

After all this, the rumors also swirled that the movie was going to be canceled, and while that remains a rumor (especially considering it originated from Mouse Trap News) it might well become the reality if Disney’s not careful.
