Hong Kong Disneyland may be forced to suspend operations on September 8 as a tropical cyclone bears down on southern China, raising the possibility of one of the rarest interruptions in the park’s history.
The Hong Kong Observatory has already signaled preparations to raise a Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between midnight and 3 a.m. on Sunday. “According to the present forecast, the tropical cyclone will intensify progressively and skirt around 200 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning,” said acting senior scientific officer Shum Chi-tai.

Forecasters added that the storm’s outer rainbands are drawing closer to the Guangdong coast, with strong winds expected to sweep across the Pearl River Estuary on Sunday. If conditions intensify, Hong Kong Disneyland could join the list of Disney parks forced into temporary closure by severe weather.
A Park Vulnerable to Storms
Opened in 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland is the smallest of Disney’s “castle parks” but has carved out a reputation for its unique attractions and steady expansion. The resort is home to Mystic Manor, a fan-favorite dark ride found nowhere else, and more recently has added Marvel-themed experiences and a Frozen-inspired land to broaden its international appeal.
Despite these successes, the park’s subtropical setting has made it especially vulnerable to typhoons. Just weeks ago, Typhoon Wipha forced a disruption to operations, underscoring the challenges of maintaining year-round schedules in storm-prone climates.

Unlike a full closure, milder weather conditions often lead to more selective measures. Outdoor attractions such as Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs, Jungle River Cruise, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, RC Racer, and Slinky Dog Spin are typically shut down during heavy rainfall or lightning.
Indoor rides — including Iron Man Experience, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!, Hyperspace Mountain, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh — usually remain open. Frozen Ever After would normally be among the options, but is currently closed for refurbishment.
Disney's Global History With Closures
For Disney, weather-driven interruptions are hardly new. In the United States, hurricanes have repeatedly forced Walt Disney World to close its gates in Florida. Earthquakes have shaken California. Global crises, from pandemics to national days of mourning, have halted operations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Even in calmer months, shortened schedules are not uncommon. Disneyland Paris will reduce hours at Walt Disney Studios Park in October to accommodate a special event, while Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is set to close early for the Gartner IT Symposium/Expo.
These adjustments are planned well in advance, unlike sudden closures that hinge on unpredictable forecasts.
For now, visitors to Hong Kong Disneyland can only wait as officials monitor the storm. The decision to shutter the park will depend on how closely the cyclone approaches and how powerful it becomes over the next 48 hours.
