Disney Park Permanently Removes Guest Perk, Will Test a New Alternative This Summer

In a world rocked by COVID-19, Disney scrambled after its pandemic closure to curtail crowds. To gradually work its way back to pre-pandemic Park attendance, Disney reopened without one of the most crucial perks of a Walt Disney World vacation: the FastPass.

With Guests desperately awaiting its return, Disney had to think quickly to deliver a similar experience. On October 21, 2021, the new iteration of the FastPass, Genie+, was born. Unlike the wholesome FastPass of the past, Genie+ costs Guests extra to get line-skipping privileges. With a starting cost of $15 per day at Disney World and $25 per day at Disneyland (both per person), bypassing the Standby line can add up with each family member.

While Disney works out the Genie+ kinks for stateside Guests, one of the Disney Parks overseas held onto the OG FastPass privilege. Classified by Disney fanatics as the best Park in the world, Tokyo Disneyland maintained the free FastPass for Guests. With seemingly limitless Park expansions and popular Disney attraction upgrades, US Disney Guests embark on day-long flights just to experience the Disney magic in Tokyo.

The FastPass is Gone for Good

With Disneyland Tokyo’s celebration of the Tokyo Disney Resort 40th Anniversary “Dream-Go-Round,” the Park announced several changes coming down the pipeline. With the 40th anniversary launching on April 15 at Tokyo Disneyland Park and Tokyo DisneySea, Disney shared an update that the beloved FastPass—temporarily suspended—will terminate its service this summer.

Don’t fret, Tokyo Disneyland die-hards—a new Guest experience is rolling out to replace the FastPass—for now. Called the Tokyo Disney Resort 40th Anniversary Priority Pass, the free service will offer Guest access to select attractions with shorter wait times.

How to Use the Priority Pass

A temporary fix for Park Guests, the Priority Pass, can be accessed through the Tokyo Disney Resort App after entering the Park. That means there’s no rush to reserve rides through Genie+ a la the US Disney Parks.

Intended to provide Guests with flexibility while they roam the Parks, the Priority Pass includes the following attractions for Tokyo Disneyland:

  • Star Tours: The Adventures Continue
  • Space Mountain
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters
  • Big Thunder Mountain
  • Pooh’s Hunny Hunt
  • Haunted Mansion
  • Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek!

Guests can also access the perk at these Tokyo DisneySea attractions:

  • Aquatopia
  • Indiana Jones® Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Turtle Talk Nemo & Friends
  • SeaRider The Magic Lamp Theater
  • Raging Spirits

While there is no official launch date for the Priority Pass, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea confirmed it will be available later this summer. For Guests who have an upcoming trip, it’s a good idea to prioritize Space Mountain before it closes for good in 2024!

A reimagined Space Mountain and Tomorrowland will land at Tokyo Disneyland in 2027.
