You can fly, you can fly…if you want to wait a lengthy amount of time in line for Peter Pan’s Flight.

Disney’s Peter Pan ride is known for its charming nostalgia, its Tinker Bell pixie dust, and, of course, its unusually long wait times.

The rail-suspended dark ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland theme parks continually has a long queue, but the reason behind it is not what you think.

Located in the Fantasyland area of each Disney Park, the attraction is based on Walt Disney’s Peter Pan, the 1953 animated film version of the classic J. M. Barrie story.

Interestingly, it is one of the few remaining attractions that was operational on Disneyland’s opening day in 1955, although the original version of the attraction was entirely redesigned in 1983. Whenever you ride this popular Disney ride, you’re walking in Walt’s footsteps!

Except, the ride actually isn’t more popular than any other attraction in the theme park! And we’re here to tell you why.

The Lightning Lane on Disney’s Genie+ (the FastPass replacement) always sells out. The line always snakes around Fantasyland. But why is the Peter Pan wait time always so long?

As soon as the Magic Kingdom Park opens at the Walt Disney World Resort, the line for Peter Pan’s Flight creeps up to over 60 minutes, often reaching the 2-hour level. The line is tedious, slow-moving, and, for many guests, is not worth the wait.

But it’s not because of popularity. In fact, it’s all about ride capacity.

Usually, Walt Disney World attractions are designed by Disney Imagineers to have the most efficient ride loading possible. Think Pirates of the Caribbean with its separate Lightning Lane boat launch or Haunted Mansion’s Omnimover Doom Buggy loading.

Well, the real reason Peter Pan’s Flight is always busy is because it does not have a very efficient ride system, which leads to the frequently high wait times we all know at the Magic Kingdom attraction.

Pirates of the Caribbean can load up to 3000 Disney Park guests an hour with its dual boat launch and larger vehicles, while Peter Pan’s Flight can only manage 800 guests an hour. Furthermore, the boat vehicles you fly in over London with Wendy and Tinker Bell can only hold one family.

That’s it: 800 guests.

That’s a wild difference, and the more we think about it, the more surprising the figures get. If the Magic Kingdom Park is open from, let’s say, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., that’s only 11,200 guests a day. By Walt Disney World visitor standards, that’s really not a lot of people!

Peter Pan actually has the lowest operating capacity of almost any ride at the Walt Disney World Resort. According to Cast Members we spoke to, however, Disney can increase the speed of the ride to deal with more crowded days at the theme park, but that means guests are actually getting a shortened ride experience.

So, there you have it. The crazy Peter Pan wait time of sometimes over 100 minutes for a children’s attraction is all explained by operating capacities, not, in fact, ride popularity.

Walt Disney World’s version of the beloved ride does feature a load/unload area with Omnimover-style moving ramps, like those found at the Haunted Mansion, to allow for a smoother flow of traffic, but this doesn’t alleviate the capacity issues.

So, next time your friends or family ask why a kid’s ride is getting longer queues than Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you can explain that it’s not more popular. It’s just less efficient!
