Disney Princess Body-Shamed in ‘The Little Mermaid’ Musical

Yesterday, Walt Disney World shared an exciting first look at the revived The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, offering fans a preview of what’s to come when the beloved show returns with updated elements like new puppets, props, scenery, effects, and songs.

While many guests were excited about this sneak peek of the show, some had less than positive comments to share about its star performer. One comment under the video preview read, “And a fat mermaid? We get that being overweight is the result of overeating and lack of exercise, and a mermaid eats fish and seaweed and does nothing but swim their entire life.” Another user joked, “She doesn’t look little.”

Fans Ridicule New Princess Costume

The most discussed criticism, however, focused on the tail puppet used in the production. Some felt that the design of the puppet was unflattering for the performer, which led to further comments regarding the overall visual appeal of the performance.

Disney has yet to comment on the controversy or the cause of the negative reactions. The casting of Ariel, like many of Disney’s characters, remains a topic of ongoing debate within the entertainment and theme park community.

The updated version of The Little Mermaid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will include several new features, such as upgraded puppetry, which is expected to enhance the storytelling experience. New songs will add a modern twist to the classic music, while the overall set design and effects aim to create an immersive experience for guests.

As the opening date nears, Disney may continue to receive feedback from fans, with some hoping the revival will open up further discussions about representation in theme park performances and entertainment in general.

The revival of The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure promises to offer a fresh perspective on a classic Disney tale, blending new technology and creative elements. While some areas of the production will undoubtedly continue to spark public debate, it’s clear that the show’s reimagining is poised to offer a modern, visually stunning version of a beloved Disney classic.
