Despite All the “Flops,” Disney Ends 2022 #1 at the Box Office

Disney Box Office 2022

For nearly the entirety of 2022, Walt Disney Studios was plagued with Box Office issues. From the now-fired Kareem Daniel making a last-minute decision as head of distribution to boot Pixar’s Turning Red from theaters to Strange World becoming one of the worst bombs in Disney Animation history and Lightyear getting banned from several countries.

Still, despite the woes, Disney still found itself as the 2022 Box Office Champion, raking in just under $5 billion worldwide!

Deadline reports, “Walt Disney is the No. 1 studio at the box office, not just worldwide with $4.9 billion, but also domestic with $2 billion and overseas with $2.9 billion.” This triumph makes 2022 the seventh consecutive year that the Mouse House has been No. 1 at the global box office. This news comes after Avatar: The Way of Water contributed to close to $1 billion before the year came to an end.

16 titles in total were sent to theaters from the collection of studios under the Disney Corporate Umbrella, including Marvel films like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Along with Jamer Cameron’s Avatar sequel, 20th Century Studios also released Barbarian and Death on the Nile.

2023 is set to be another exciting year for Disney Movie fans with the release of The Little Mermaid remake staring Halle Bailey and featuring new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Pixar’s Elemental, Haunted Mansion, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
