The Walt Disney Company has one of the largest movie portfolios in existence. And that includes The Marvels, one of last year’s biggest box office bombs.

The Marvels Flop at the Box Office
The Marvels (2023) is infamous with Hollywood, MCU die-hards, and Disney Fanatics.
Why? Regardless of how you feel about Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, or Monica Rambeau, the MCU film flopped badly in theaters. It was so bad that it may have killed the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (but time will tell).

The Marvel movie was released on November 10, 2023, and had a $47 million opening weekend. It then made history by having the worst-ever second-week drop, falling by 79%.
It stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan). The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film was also directed by Nia DaCosta.
The movie hits Disney+ on February 7, 2024.
Does Anybody Care?
The question of “Does Anybody Care?” is based on the notion that very few fans of Captain Marvel or the MCU showed up to the theaters. The audience numbers were so poor for The Marvels that it only brought in about $197 million globally.
This number has led some to estimate that the movie actually lost Marvel Studios (owned by Disney) $300 million.

There are many reasons people have speculated for the movie’s poor box office numbers.
Some have blamed sexism (since Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau are all women). Others have cited superhero fatigue (considering The Flash and Blue Beetle also bombed in 2023).
And many have pointed to Disney+ subscribers, who would-be moviegoers, but instead, just wait for films to be available for streaming.
Others have suggested that the movie required too much “homework” by having to be familiar with Secret Invasion, Ms. Marvel (the Disney+ show), WandaVision, and be up-to-date on all other MCU phase four movies.

But whatever the reason, the fact remains that audiences didn’t seem interested or willing to show up. Again, it begs the question, will there be interest in The Marvels (2023) when it arrives on streaming?
We shall see. There have been previous instances, such as with Elemental (2023), where Disney movies underperformed at the box office yet were popular on Disney+.
