In 2023, a whistleblower reached out to Youtuber WDW Pro with claims that the Walt Disney Company forced employees to keep DEI journals, targeted those who were politically right-leaning, and tied an individual’s politics and virtue signaling to pay raises.

Woke Disney?

The Walt Disney Company has been accused of being “woke.” But what is “woke”?

It currently has two official definitions (according to Merriam-Webster):
1. Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)
2. Politically liberal or progressive (as in matters of racial and social justice), especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme.

The anonymous whistleblower made multiple accusations.

Culture Corner Meetings

The whistleblower provided the Youtuber with documents from Disney’s Human Resources Department, including slideshows from the Reimagine Tomorrow program.

Disney provided employees the opportunity to participate in various meetings on inclusivity and sensitivity with topics such as feminism and religion. These meetings would also be organized whenever there was breaking news on the political or cultural front to tell employees what to say and do both internally and publicly.

An example given is the controversy over the Reimagine Tomorrow videos that came out discussing LGBTQ+ content. When that happened, the whistleblower claimed that Disney told its employees it was a fake news story and no one should believe it.

Disney’s HR department also allegedly monitored the attendance of these meetings. Although they weren’t officially required, not attending them could affect your job security and potential raises.

As part of your performance review within the company, Disney employees were required (starting in 2020) to prove how committed they were to DEI initiatives.

Conservative Monitoring

The whistleblower also claimed that if a Disney employee posted something conservative on social media, they could be expected to be called into Disney HR.

These actions, the whistleblower claimed, forced many people throughout the company who had conservative or moderate political views to be pressured out.

Forced DEI

The whistleblower also shared a document called Disney Ad Sales with the YouTuber. It describes that employees payout is tied to specific metrics including “Personally participate in trainings and other educational D&I initiatives.”

The whistleblower also claims that Disney would hire and promote employees and applicants based on their race, gender, and sexuality as opposed to their talent or experience.

Whether or not these claims are valid, Disney Fanatic cannot independently confirm. You can view the full video referenced in this article below.

About Steven

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
