The original attraction debuted in Disneyland Park in 1969. It was soon followed by Walt Disney World Resort when Magic Kingdom Park opened in October 1971.

Haunted Mansion History

The idea for a haunted house attraction came from Walt E. Disney himself. However, the genius and namesake of the company passed away before he had a chance to see his vision fully realized.

However, today, it stands as the quintessential Disney ride. A version of it can also be found in various Disney theme parks worldwide, including the Disneyland Park in Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland.

The fan-favorite dark ride combines audio-animatronics, practical effects, a family-friendly omni-mover system, and a fun adventure that cleverly balances spooky with silly.

Closed Indefinitely

Officially announced by Disneyland Resort itself, the Haunted Mansion will close its doors next month (January 2024). Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion currently has its holiday overlay inspired by Disney’s classic film The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

The final day of the Haunted Mansion Holiday will be on January 21.

Then, starting on January 22, the ride will close indefinitely. Disneyland has revealed that this is due to the ride receiving a refurbishment. The entire exterior area of the ride will undergo a “spirited metamorphosis.” The ride’s new queue will contain new garden areas, a water fountain, a gazebo, and a greenhouse.

It has also been announced that a new retail space will be added near the ride exit, themed to Madame Leota.

The ride itself, though, is rumored to have some updates as well, although Disney has remained pretty tight-lipped on that topic. But interestingly enough, Disneyland has not provided an official reopening date for the classic dark ride.

It has led to much fan speculation about what could be in store and what surprises Disney Imagineers may have up their sleeves…

About Steven

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
