Remakes and reboots abound as Disney continues to bring back previous movies or shows, and the next upcoming remake involves the popular children’s book series The Spiderwick Chronicles. The books (which were written by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black) have already had a well-received movie adaptation in the form of a 2008 film starring English actor Freddie Highmore as the two brothers and Once Upon a Time actress Sarah Bolger as the boys’ sister — but now Disney is trying for its own version, and a Marvel director is officially on board!
While announcing the upcoming adaptation, Disney+ apparently called the series a “modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure.”
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a fantasy and adventure book series about three children (Jared Grace, his twin brother Simon Grace, and their sister Mallory Grace) who move to a strange new house with their mom Helen and discover their great-great uncle’s connection with a “secret and maybe foreboding faerie world existing parallel to their own”.
There are multiple books in the series, and Disney released some teaser images from the adaptation before announcing the chosen director. Deadline has shared that the director has just been announced, and it is Marry Me director Kat Coiro. Kat Coiro will also be an executive producer on the show; she took on the same roles for six episodes of Marvel’s She-Hulk series, including the pilot episode.
The series’ original writers (Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi) will be executive producers for the series as well. Are you a Disney fan who is interested in this new adaptation on Disney+, or would you prefer to stick with the Nickelodeon version from 2008 (or perhaps just to read the books, with no onscreen versions at all)?
Other upcoming reboots include a Percy Jackson reboot, a Full Monty reboot, and a Zorro reboot — but sadly, no Lizzie McGuire reboot seems likely.
