It’s been an eventful year so far for Dwayne Johnson. Earlier this year, he was named in a $3 billion lawsuit claiming he and other conspirators allegedly planned on kidnapping former WWE wrestler Trenesha Briggers (Rhaka Khan) and her children. That lawsuit was later dismissed. But after that, NBC canceled Johnson’s show Young Rock.
There was also talk that Johnson would replace Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but that was not to be. After that, NBC canceled Johnson’s show Young Rock.
But fear not; Johnson was able to bounce back. At Disney’s shareholder’s meeting, Johnson announced he would star in a new live-action Moana movie. And according to IMDB, Johnson currently has more than ten movies in various stages of development, including Jungle Cruise 2.
Johnson is working on one of the films about a subject matter he has never tackled. Johnson’s production company, Seven Bucks, is now making a documentary about famed comedian Andy Kaufman. This is the first documentary that will have the cooperation of the Kaufman estate. Kaufman’s life was immortalized in the film, Man on the Moon (1999), starring Jim Carrey.
Tyler Kaufman, Andy’s nephew, said in an official statement:
My uncle Andy was a comic genius who continues to inspire artists around the world. There has never been anyone like him and there never will be. He delighted and provoked, and was just as comfortable creating anger and confusion as laughter. He made indelible impressions. His work is as vibrant today as ever, and we’re thrilled to join this filmmaking team in bringing viewers a very intimate and comprehensive look into his life and career.
There is a connection between Johnson and Kaufman, who died of lung cancer in 1984 at 35. They were both professional wrestlers, sort of. As part of his comedy, Kaufman wrestled against women. He proclaimed himself the “Inter-Gender Champion of the World.” His career ended when he challenged professional wrestler Jerry “the King” Lawler to a match. After getting pile driven into the mat, Kaufman claimed that Lawler broke his neck. It was later revealed that the entire incident was staged.
Kaufman was known for playing Latka Gravas on the television show Taxi and hosting Saturday Night Live, where he would frequently impersonate Elvis Presley.
Dwayne Johson and his partner, Dany Garcia, will work on his project with former late-night host David Letterman and his production company, Worldwide Pants and Fifth Season. Johnson was able to get the cooperation of the Andy Kaufman estate.
There is no release date for the documentary.
