Nearly seven years ago, Disney released a new animated film that was unlike anything they had done before. Yes, it was a princess movie, but this was the first time that Disney had featured a Polynesian princess and focused on Polynesian traditions. Moana took the world by storm. Those who saw it loved the story, the music, the traditions, and the zany chicken, Hei Hei. Moana starred Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Rachel House as Gramma Tala, Jermaine Clement as Tamatoa, and Temuera Morrison as Chief Tui.

One thing that Disney has gone all-in on lately is live-action remakes. Recently, Disney has released live-action remakes of animated hits like Dumbo and Pinocchio. The company also has several live-action films that are in the works and slated to be released soon, including The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan & Wendy, Lilo & Stitch, and The Aristocats.

And now, Disney has just shared some news about its Polynesian princess.

At Disney’s Annual Shareholders meeting, which was held on April 3, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Dwayne Johnson shared that a new Moana live-action remake was in the works! Now, the story is in the very early stages, but it is certain to be something incredible.

Take a look at the announcement, which Johnson shared while on the beach in his home state of Hawaii. Johnson’s daughters even got in on the action.

JUST ANNOUNCED: From Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, a live-action reimagining of Disney’s Moana is in the works!

This new live-action film is just one of the ways that Disney is bringing Moana and her story to the limelight. Construction is nearly complete on a brand-new Moana attraction in EPCOT at the Walt Disney World Resort. Moana: Journey of Water will allow Guests to interact with water as it falls from the sky and journeys to the ocean and back again. EPCOT has always been a theme Park where Guests can have wonderful experiences while, at the same time, learning about the world around them. The new Moana attraction will continue that tradition. It is slated to open later this year.
