When the animated movie Encanto premiered on Disney+ two years ago, Disney fans went wild for the movie’s stunning visual style, the endearing Uncle Bruno, and the now notoriously-addicting song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (not to mention other standout songs like “Surface Pressure” and “Dos Oruguitas”).
We Don’t Talk About the Encanto Sequel…
Disney clearly caught onto the demand and responded with a bevy of new plans for Encanto everything ranging from Encanto merchandise to Character Meet and Greets to an Encanto section of the Disney Parks.
Now, however, one actress from Encanto has indicated that one of the most highly-anticipated Encanto add-ons might not be happening, or at least probably won’t be happening for quite a while.
Stephanie Beatriz, who plays the main character Mirabel Madrigal, has revealed (in a new interview with The Wrap) that she won’t be reprising her role for an Encanto sequel anytime soon.
Abandoned for Zootopia?
“I would love to work with them again,” the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and In the Heights actress enthused when asked about Encanto directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard (whose names might look familiar from the Zootopia and Tangled credits, as well). “That team on that film was so incredible to work with.”
However, the actress (who actually sang her character Mirabel’s power ballad “Waiting on a Miracle” while she was literally about to give birth) also added that, to her knowledge, “a lot of [Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s] time right now is being taken up by other stuff.”
“I know Jared and I think Bryon too are working on the second Zootopia right now,” she explained. “But I would love to work with them again.”
The Encanto sequel was not actually confirmed by Disney, but since Disney leadership now refers to Encanto as a “franchise” and since we’ve seen the Frozen and Incredibles sequels do so well (not to mention the sequels from plenty of their predecessors), a sequel did seem likely until now.
As Disney Fanatics already know, movies and shows can often languish in production for many years without coming to viewers — and even more so when there’s an ongoing writers’ strike.
“I haven’t heard jack s–t”
The actress and mother did point out that “there’s a ton of story to be told and there’s so many people that would love to see that,” even though she “[hasn’t] heard jack s–t.”
Hopefully, Stephanie Beatriz will get to return to the role of Mirabel Madrigal sooner rather than later!
