EPCOT Attraction Not Happening Two Days Running–Here’s Why

EPCOT fans were taken by surprise on the night of May 20 when Luminous The Symphony of Us—the park’s signature nighttime fireworks spectacular—was abruptly canceled. Only 45 minutes before the scheduled performance, guests received a push notification via the My Disney Experience app notifying them of the cancellation. Though no formal explanation was offered, online speculation pointed to a potential malfunction of the bridge.

With the cancellation fresh in mind, regular ticket holders looking to catch the show the next evening won’t be able to—EPCOT would be closing early to the public on May 21. This change stems from a private buyout for the 2025 SAP Sapphire & ASUG Annual Conference Orlando, which will occupy the park from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. As a result, EPCOT will stop admitting regular guests at 5:30 p.m., a notable shift from its usual 9 p.m. schedule.

The conference made headlines last year when it prompted the early closure of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where Maroon 5 headlined the entertainment. This year, conference guests at EPCOT will be treated to a live performance by the Zac Brown Band.

Parkgoers planning their day on May 21 will want to consider alternative destinations, as the other three Walt Disney World parks are expected to accommodate the displaced EPCOT crowd. Magic Kingdom will operate from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe Resort guests from 10 p.m. to midnight. Disney’s Animal Kingdom will open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Hollywood Studios will remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Private functions such as this are not new to Walt Disney World Resort. In fact, each January, Magic Kingdom often hosts internal celebrations to honor cast member milestones, temporarily closing to day guests in the process. Still, these changes can cause unexpected detours in vacation plans, particularly when they’re announced on short notice.

Despite the early closure, EPCOT continues to offer plenty of daytime magic. With its vibrant mix of innovative attractions and cultural showcases, the park delights visitors year-round. Among its highlights are Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Frozen Ever After, both of which draw consistent crowds.

The park’s layout, now divided into World Discovery, World Celebration, and World Nature, reflects its ongoing transformation. The retheme of Test Track is currently in progress, promising a new take inspired by its original World of Motion roots. These changes align with EPCOT’s identity as a celebration of innovation, culture, and community.

Elsewhere in the resort, Magic Kingdom is ushering in a new era for Frontierland, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is preparing to debut Tropical Americas, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios will soon transform Grand Avenue into Monstropolis. Cast members are expected to receive a special farewell experience with one last showing of Muppet*Vision 3D before changes begin.

Guests continue to enjoy the unique atmosphere of EPCOT’s World Showcase, with its international pavilions offering everything from cultural dining to the popular “drink around the world” tradition. The World Showcase Lagoon remains a central gathering point for guests to experience fireworks, music, and storytelling under the stars.

With the park closing early today, guests are encouraged to plan accordingly. Regular visitors may not have access to EPCOT during the evening hours, but the magic continues across the rest of the resort.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
