Disney Star’s Popular Hulu Show Canceled After Two Seasons

In 2005, CBS launched one of its most successful television series to date — How I Met Your Mother. The show centered around Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor), who, in the year 2030, sat his children down and told them the story of how he met their mother. Ted had a lot of great friends who were a major part of his story — Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segal), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). The show ran for 9 years, airing its final season in 2014. 

Even though it’s been nearly a decade since the final episode of How I Met Your Mother aired, the show remains incredibly popular. It was so popular that, in 2022, a new spinoff series premiered on Hulu. The series was called How I Met Your Father and starred Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff. As with its predecessor, the show told the story of Sophie (Duff) telling her child how she met their father. An older version of Sophie was played by Sex and the City star, Kim Cattrall.

How I Met Your Father was not as successful as How I Met Your Mother, but it had many devoted fans. According to multiple reports, the series has been canceled at 20th Television (formerly 20th Century Fox) after just two seasons. Unfortunately for those watching, it was never revealed who the father of Sophie’s baby was.

Sadly, this is not the only Hulu show that was canceled this week. It was also announced that The Great — starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult — had been canceled after three seasons.

Hulu’s parent company is The Walt Disney Company, and is not the only streamer seeing big cancelations. Disney CEO has been on a tear as he works to save the company $5.5 billion and stop the bleeding at Disney+. Disney fans have seen multiple shows canceled this year, including National Treasure: Edge of History, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Willow, and Big Shot.

Despite Iger’s efforts to cut the budget, Disney will most likely have to shell out billions early next year when its deal with Comcast comes to fruition. In 2019, the two companies made a deal that Disney would have the option to buy Comcast’s stake in Hulu in 2024. The minimum valuation of Hulu was set at $27.5 billion, with Disney having to shell out a minimum of $9.2 billion.

The two seasons of How I Met Your Father are currently available to stream on Hulu. The series also stars Christopher Lowell as Jesse, Francia Raisa as Valentina, Josh Peck as Drew, Suraj Sharma as Sid, Tien Tran as Ellen, and Tom Ainsley as Charlie. Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders also each made an appearance in an episode to tie the two series together.
