On June 30, the world will get to see Harrison Ford don his iconic fedora one last time when the fifth movie in the legendary Indiana Jones franchise hits theaters. Jones first portrayed Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones in 1981 in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Since then, he has portrayed the famed archaeologist in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989), and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Ford is now 80 years old, but that didn’t stop him from jumping in one last time to tell Indy’s final story. Ford’s last story will be told in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
It is now being reported that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny won’t see its first audiences in major theaters around the world. Instead, Disney has decided to premiere the new film at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Dial of Destiny director James Mangold shared a statement with The Wrap, which reported the exciting news.
“In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film as part of Director’s Fortnite. Twenty-eight years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle. My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure with you!” Mangold said in a statement.
Upon announcing the film’s premiere at Cannes, Cannes officials also released a statement:
An official statement from the Cannes Film Festival about the “Indiana Jones” premiere read, “The Festival de Cannes would like to thank The Walt Disney Company and LucasFilm for their trust and is looking forward to hosting the screening of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which promises another great cinematic adventure around the world.”
Harrison Ford will not just be attending Cannes to celebrate his new film. The acclaimed actor will be celebrated for his longtime work and everything he has contributed to the film industry. The premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny comes 15 years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also premiered at the world’s top film festival.
Even though the movie will premiere in just a couple of months, we still don’t know much about the film’s plot. However, we do know that CGI was used to de-age Ford’s character. A young Indiana Jones will once again be fighting the Nazis. Specifically, some former Nazis who now work in the US government, as some of the movie takes place in the 1960s. It is also rumored that the film will involve the famous Space Race that the U.S. was a part of.
News of the Cannes premiere comes not long after it was reported that Disney is shelving an Indiana Jones series it was working on. Nothing has been confirmed as to why the show has been canceled. However, rumors say that Disney is focusing more on the power of its Star Wars franchise.
In addition to Ford, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will star Mads Mikkelsen as Jurgen Voller, Boyd Holbrook as Klaber, Antonio Banderas as Renaldo, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena (Indy’s goddaughter), and Tony Jones as Basil. John Rhys-Davies will also return to his well-known role as Sallah. Dial of Destiny will be directed by Kathleen Kennedy, unlike all other Indiana Jones films, which have been directed by Steven Spielberg.
