Is Roseanne Barr Returning to ABC? Tease Sparks Speculation After Racist Comments Firing

Roseanne Barr’s career has been a whirlwind of success, controversy, and comebacks. From her breakout role in the 1980s with Roseanne to her more recent high-profile issues, Barr has remained one of the most talked-about figures in television. Known for her unfiltered comedic style, she created a cultural phenomenon with Roseanne, the sitcom that captured the complexities of working-class America.

However, her 2018 firing from ABC due to a racist tweet left her career at a crossroads. Despite the public backlash, could Barr find a way back to ABC’s airwaves? As The Conners nears its final season, many are wondering if Roseanne Barr’s iconic character could make a return.

When Roseanne was revived in 2017 after a 20-year hiatus, it quickly became one of the biggest television events of the year. The reboot of the beloved show generated massive ratings, with Barr’s return as the titular character drawing in both long-time fans and new viewers.

But, just one season later, the revival came crashing down when Barr sent out a racially insensitive tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to President Obama. The backlash was swift and severe, leading to her firing from the show.

ABC made the decision to continue the show without Barr, rebranding it as The Conners and writing her character off as having died from an accidental drug overdose.

Despite The Conners’ success, the legacy of Barr’s character, Roseanne Conner, continues to cast a long shadow over the series. Fans of the original Roseanne still mourn the loss of the character and have questioned whether Barr could return to offer closure or even participate in the final episodes of The Conners.

The show has been successful without her, but with the final season premiering on March 26, the question of whether Barr’s character could make an appearance has been raised once again. Could Roseanne return, even in a symbolic form, to give fans the closure they need?

In an interview with TheWrap, The Conners executive producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan addressed the possibility of Barr’s return to the series.

“We aren’t bringing anybody back from the dead,” Helford said, referencing old “Roseanne” plotlines that brought Dan back from the dead for the reboot. When pressed if Barr could return in ghost-form, Helford said, “Well, I didn’t say not, but yeah,” keeping it cryptic.

Barr’s absence from The Conners has left a hole in the series. The Conner family’s story has continued without her, but her death and the family’s grief have been recurring themes.

In the premiere of season seven, Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) expressed her desire to sue opioid manufacturers for their role in Roseanne’s overdose. This storyline continues to center around the emotional impact of Roseanne’s death, showing that while the show may have moved forward, the character’s influence still looms large.

Despite the ongoing controversy that followed Barr’s firing, the legacy of Roseanne cannot be overlooked. Barr’s portrayal of the iconic character was integral to the success of the show, and her absence has undoubtedly changed the dynamic of The Conners.

The decision to kill off Roseanne’s character was a bold one, but it also provided the opportunity to explore the themes of loss and grief in more depth. Yet, the question remains: should Barr’s character have a final moment of closure, even if it’s in a non-traditional form?

Barr herself has been clear about her regret over the tweet that led to her firing, but she has also defended her right to speak her mind. In the years since her dismissal, Barr has continued to express her views on various issues, and her outspoken nature remains a defining characteristic.

The Conners airs Wednesday nights on ABC, with the series finale airing on April 30.
