Jim Carrey has made a name for himself by bringing some of the most unforgettable characters to life on the big screen. His recent return as the over-the-top villain Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3—which has raked in a staggering $422.4 million worldwide—has reignited conversations about whether he might revisit some of his other iconic roles.
Among the most requested? The Grinch from the beloved 2000 holiday classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey, 63, was asked if he’d ever consider stepping back into the green fur and mischievous grin. While he was quick to shut down the idea of enduring the “excruciating” prosthetics again, he did leave the door open for another approach.
“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” he mused. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
With modern technology advancing in leaps and bounds, the idea of a CGI-enhanced Grinch isn’t all that far-fetched.

Now, Carrey’s The Mask co-star Cameron Diaz has also weighed in on a possible sequel to the 1994 comedy, which saw Carrey’s mild-mannered Stanley Ipkiss transformed into a cartoonish, green-faced trickster. When asked by Access Hollywood whether she’d return as Tina Carlyle, Diaz didn’t hesitate.
“If Jim’s on board, I’ve been riding those coat-tails from day one!” she joked. Reports suggest Carrey himself has expressed interest in bringing The Mask back for another wild ride.
Whether Carrey will officially sign on for any of these projects remains to be seen. The actor has previously hinted at retirement, stating before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that he wasn’t sure he’d return to the big screen. However, in an interview with AP Entertainment last year, he admitted he both loves playing a genius—and, well, “needed the money.”
His stance on revisiting past roles has been inconsistent. Back in 2022, he told E! News’ Daily Pop that he’d only consider returning as Ace Ventura if a director like The Dark Knight’s Christopher Nolan took the character in a fresh, unexpected direction.
Whether it’s The Grinch, The Mask, or even his delightfully chaotic turn as The Riddler in Batman Forever, there’s no doubt that fans would love to see Carrey step back into one of his legendary roles. The question is: would he?
