The Star Wars timeline continues to expand, with two major films on the horizon — The Mandalorian & Grogu in May 2026 and Star Wars: Starfighter the following year.
But while the big screen looks toward new eras, questions remain about the future of Rey (Daisy Ridley), whose journey seemingly concluded in Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019). While the untitled Rey film is still reportedly in development, until that project sees the light of day, her fans may need to look elsewhere to get their fix.
Luckily, Rey tends to consistently surface across other media within the franchise, most recently in the Disney+ animated miniseries LEGO Star Wars short Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past . But soon, she’s set to return in a new canonical story set between Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker.

Announced at the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at NYCC (New York Comic-Con), “Star Wars: Legacy”, written by Madeleine Roux, sees Rey and Leia Organa working to restore Luke’s broken lightsaber in the wake of the Battle of Crait as seen in the 2017 sequel.
Here’s the official description for the book:
Set between Episodes VIII and IX, Rey and Leia embark on a quest to repair Rey’s lightsaber and rekindle the legacy of the Jedi.
After barely escaping the First Order on Crait, Rey and the Resistance are struggling to rebuild. Her friends need the last Jedi more than ever, but Rey feels alone and overwhelmed. Jedi tradition is built on masters and apprentices, and Rey’s teacher is gone. Leia Organa tries her best to train Rey in the ways of the Force as Luke did for her so many years ago, but Leia’s knowledge is limited, Rey’s lightsaber is broken, and the specter of Kylo Ren and regrets from the past haunt them both. How can Leia pass the torch when she herself is unsure of the way?
But then, the ancient Jedi texts offer a glimmer of hope: a long-forgotten Jedi temple on Tython that might hold the key to repairing Rey’s saber. Rey leaps at the chance to journey there — and to her surprise, so does Leia.
Rey and Leia’s nascent mentorship is put to the test when they discover the temple on Tython is filled with obscure clues to decipher and arcane trials to complete. As they work to unravel the temple’s mysteries, they encounter a group of refugees living in its shadow, hiding from a First Order officer hot on the trail of two freedom fighters in their midst. With the threat of the First Order looming and the secrets of the temple yet to be unlocked, the newly forged master and apprentice must confront their pasts, reach each other in the present, and decide what it means to carry the legacy of the Jedi into the future.”
Meanwhile, “Star Wars: The Jaws of Jakku” — a new Audible Original written by Cavan Scott — finds Rey returning to her desolate home world alongside Finn and BB-8.
When the trio encounter a young girl on a perilous mission, Rey is forced to confront her past and the ghosts of Jakku once again. Narrated by Helen Sadler, who has previously voiced Rey in several projects, the audiobook extends Rey’s development as she continues her Jedi training.

Given these appearances, it seems inevitable that Rey could eventually return beyond the printed page and even beyond film. She’s already appeared in animated form before, notably in Forces of Destiny, but the tone of her recent stories — introspective and character-driven — would align perfectly with the more mature style of anthology animated shows like Tales of the Jedi and Visions.
While rumors continue about a live-action Rey film, Lucasfilm’s current focus on expanding the timeline between sequel trilogy episodes leaves room for creative storytelling in other mediums.
“Legacy” releases on July 28, 2026. “ The Jaws of Jakku” is available on Audible now.
