Rey Skywalker is returning to Star Wars, but not in the way fans first expected. While her next film adventure has been pushed back, Lucasfilm is finding other ways to keep the character at the center of the franchise.

Originally slated to lead the saga back to theaters in late 2026, Daisy Ridley’s Rey was the focus of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned standalone film. But that project is now on pause. Disney shifted its December 2026 calendar to make way for Ice Age 6, leaving Star Wars off the slate. According to reports, Lucasfilm has prioritized James Mangold’s film and other projects before revisiting Rey’s journey.
Confirmed for release instead are Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026 and Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter in 2027. Dave Filoni’s Mando-Verse film remains in development but without new details.

Though delayed, the Rey film is not canceled, keeping open the possibility of her eventual return to theaters. In the meantime, Simon Kinberg is developing a trilogy of films—Episodes X through XII—that will take Star Wars beyond the Skywalker family.
Fans won’t have to wait until then for more Rey content. Lucasfilm announced an upcoming audiobook, “The Jaws of Jakku,” releasing in late 2025 on Audible. The story revisits the desert planet between Star Wars: Episode VII–The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019), where Rey, Finn, and BB-8 confront threats below the sands and aid a young girl in peril.

Meanwhile, Lucasfilm is also leaning into animation and alternate storytelling. LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy—Pieces of the Past debuted on Disney+ on September 19, 2025. The four-episode series introduces Master Solitus, voiced by Dan Stevens, a fallen Jedi who mentors Tony Revolori’s Darth Rev while wielding dual purple lightsabers.
The LEGO adventure operates outside of canon, yet still engages with deeper lore. Solitus’ violet sabers recall Mace Windu’s weapon, and the series openly plays with what-if scenarios. Returning voices include Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka and Ahmed Best as Darth Jar Jar, alongside Gaten Matarazzo, Bobby Moynihan, Ben Schwartz, and Tony Revolori.
This time, Daisy Ridley does not provide Rey’s voice. Instead, Helen Sadler steps into the role of “dark Rey,” continuing her work from previous LEGO projects. Her casting offers a fresh take on the character in a lighter, brick-built Multiverse setting.

The shift underscores Lucasfilm’s dual approach: testing inventive scenarios through LEGO while holding back on major theatrical arcs until the timing feels right. Both platforms highlight themes of legacy and reinvention—whether through Solitus’ fall from the Jedi or Rey’s return to Jakku to face her past.
The question now is how “The Jaws of Jakku” will impact the larger saga. Will its new lore be acknowledged in future films, or serve mainly as a bridge for fans awaiting Rey’s theatrical return? And will LEGO’s tonal experiments influence how Lucasfilm approaches live-action storytelling?
For now, the studio is balancing playful offshoots with more serious continuity, leaving the next phase of Rey’s journey as one of Star Wars’ biggest open questions.
