From producer Joe Russo, the new live-action Hercules remake will be “more experimental” and was in part inspired by TikTok.

There have been many live-action remakes of classic Disney films in the recent past—Pinocchio being one of the most recent ones—and now the next one that fans have been excited about is Hercules. The film is going to be produced by the Russo brothers who are also responsible for Avengers: End-game through Marvel.

While the Russo brothers have been clear that they won’t be returning to Marvel for at least ten years since they’re focusing on their own production company, AGBO, through their company they’re producing a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1997 animated feature “Hercules.” Guy Ritchie, who helmed the 2019 live-action remake of “Aladdin,” will be playing the role of director.

As reported to Variety, while many of Disney’s recent remakes have been criticized for sticking too closely with the original script, and source material, Russo says that Hercules will be different.

Per the article,

Russo says “Hercules” will be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution.”

“I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film,” Russo adds.

Russo also went on to add that the film would be a TikTok-inspired musical, and share the original’s “unconventional approach.” He said, “There are questions about how you translate it as a musical. Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”

The original Hercules (1997) was based on the legend of the Greek demigod. As with all of Disney’s animated films in the 1990s, it’s also a musical, largely sung by a quintet of Black women serving as a Greek chorus.
