When visiting a Disney theme park, many Guests know that there’s a chance that not every ride and attraction will be up and operational. Rides and attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are under constant stress, since they are used for hours every single day. Because of that, it’s important that the rides close down every so often, so Disney can refurbish them. Some of the refurbishments are quick, as not much repair is needed. But other times, major things needed to be fixed, and the ride could be down for months.
One of the rides at Disneyland Park that seems to need the most upkeep is Indiana Jones Adventure, which is located in Adventureland. The attraction — which takes Guests into the Temple of the Forbidden Eye — has been open since 1995. It closed down at the end of last year, as Guests were repeatedly complaining about broken features like the giant snake, the rolling boulder, and projection effects.
Now, after more than three months, the attraction has reopened, and it’s better than ever! According to a report from The Orange County Register, Disney Imagineers cleaned and fixed every single aspect of the ride. In addition to that, they added not one, but TWO new projections!
Imagineering “plussed up” the ride with two new digital effects scenes designed to demonstrate the power of Mara, the antagonist deity within the Temple of the Forbidden Eye at the center of the story unfolding in the attraction.
“Our additions to Indiana Jones Adventure add touches of new magic that enhance its already established storyline,” Imagineering executive creative director Kim Irvine said in a statement released by Disneyland. “Mara taunts guests even further with a powerful, electric-like energy and frenetic apparitions. This force of Mara turns a possible passageway escape into a rubble of dust.”
There are hundreds of skeleton heads throughout the ride, as well as 40 mummies. Each and every one was meticulously cleaned prior to the reopening. Disney also replaced the old projections that did not show up as well, and fixed the rolling ball, as well as the giant snake.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — the fifth film in the franchise — is slated to come out on June 30, 2023. As of right now, no new scenes or projections have been added to Indiana Jones Adventure to represent the new movie.
