On the first day of the 2022 D23 Expo, Pixar Animation Studios announced that a sequel to their beloved feature film Inside Out was in the works. But they also shared more information on their upcoming original feature film, Elemental.

Disney shared the first images, saying,

“*fire* and *water* come together in this FIRST LOOK at Ember & Wade played by Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, from Disney and Pixar’s Elemental, coming to theaters June 16, 2023!”

Directed by Peter Sohn, the new film pairs a male character made of water with a female character made of fire, sporting the catchphrase “opposites react.”

Deadline explains,

“Inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York, Elemental journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember (Lewis) and Wade (Athie), in a city where fire, water, land and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.”

“The idea [for Elemental] started with my parents. As immigrants to the U.S. from Korea in the ’70s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to create a life here in New York,” Sohn said in introducing the film. “And just like them, many people have left their people and families to a new land, with hopes and dreams, all mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and neighborhoods.”

Very little is still known about this story. It is still unclear if this will turn out to be a romance or not, but this reporter’s curiosity is sparked to see how a being made of water and a being made of fire can find a way to coexist.
