At the end of the day, there are two kinds of voice actors: those whose real-life identity stays subdued behind the animated role they are playing and those whose real-life identity transcends their character. And the latest clip of Disney’s upcoming movie Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers appears to prove that John Mulaney is the latter example when it comes to bringing Chip to life.
On Sunday, May 15, Disney released a short clip from the movie in which we see one of the first scenes where Chip and Dale see each other for the first time in supposedly a long time. Chip’s lingering resentment towards his former counterpart comes out in a dry, sassy way that is classic John Mulaney.

Likewise, fans will clearly see that Dale is getting the Andy Samberg treatment on top of the CGI surgery. Close your eyes, and you will hear the Saturday Night Live veterans. Open your eyes, and you will see Chip and Dale.
This sort of casting direction can lead to a divide among target audiences: the character-focused audience watching to get more of Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and the cast-focused audience watching to see Andy Samberg play opposite John Mulaney. It can also put the characters and story at arguably unnecessary risk.
Disney has experienced both results with the celebrity-focused casting, achieving major success with Bill Murray as Baloo in Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book remake, and not-so-good results like casting Seth Rogen as Pumbaa in The Lion King remake.

Hopefully, the moviemakers at Disney and Lonely Island have found the perfect median that can do justice to the overall story and satisfy both sides of the audience. Although, this reporter is unsure how Peter Pan fans will feel about this movie at the end of the day.
