‘They Do Not Control This State’ – DeSantis Puts Disney in Its Place

DeSantis Disney

Earlier this week, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the Parental Rights in Education Bill that promised to keep all sex and gender identity education–and, according to most parents, indoctrination–of school kids between the ages of Kindergarten and Third Grade.

However, a false narrative has spread in which a very vocal contingent claims the new law is a way to suppress the LGBTQ+ community and called it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. And whether out of fear of losing its consumer and labor base or other some reason, several politicians and media companies have taken the side against the–including The Walt Disney Company.

Cast Member Protests

The other day, we at Disney Fanatic reported that after Governor DeSantis signed the bill into law, The Walt Disney Company would take action to financially support the means necessary to overturn the new legislation passed in Tallahassee. Well, it appears the Governor of the Sunshine State did not take too kindly to the idea of a massive media conglomerate trying to flex its muscles in the political arena.

In a statement to members of the press, Gov. DeSantis said:

“This state is governed by the interest of the people of the state of Florida. It is not based on the demands of California corporate executives. They do not run this state, they do not control this state.”

He shared the full statement on Twitter in which he also called Disney’s statement “fundamentally dishonest” and that it “crossed the line.” He tweeted:

“The state of Florida is governed according to the interests of the people, not according to the political posturing of corporate executives in California. We will never allow corporate influence to repeal the substantive rights of parents in our state.”

The Walt Disney Company is one of the largest and most recognized employers in the State, employing nearly 70,000 Cast Members at the Walt Disney World Resort in Central Florida alone, and it had plans to move more employees from California due to the much more welcoming business policies.

Here at Disney Fanatic, we have continued to report that more and more magic is returning to The Most Magical Place On Earth. EPCOT’s International Festival of the Arts is in full swing and the International Cultural Representatives are returning to World Showcase. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is nearing completion. The Festival of Fantasy Parade is back. But, it is clear as day–at least to this writer–that Disney’s political stances are having a severely divisive effect not just on its Cast Members but on its Gusts and fans as well. (Yes, we read the comments.)

We will continue to report on all aspects of Disney news and hope that the politics get out of the way for magic that was, in this writer’s opinion, already made for everybody.
