Last month, a popular TikTok family created a video that went viral for all the wrong reasons. The Kelly Fam, which consists of parents Ty and Haley Kelly and their three children, shared a video of a trip to Disney. Unfortunately, their young son Kannon was just a bit too short to ride some of the attractions he wanted to. So, the family came up with a “hack” by adding padding to his sneakers. Kannon then met the height requirement, but TikTokers were angry that the family was putting their son — as well as Cast Members and other Guests — at risk.

After about a week of the video being posted to TikTok, and a lot of people upset about the hack, Ty Kelly posted an “apology” video that went over just about as well as the original “hack” video. In the second video, he said that he is a flawed person who constantly has to apologize to his family and needs Jesus every single day. However, he did not apologize for the hack video itself, and even said that they would not be taking the original video down.

It looks like his opinion has changed.

The family spoke to Today.com about the hack, and ended up apologizing for both the original video and then the follow-up.

“We are truly sorry about the whole situation,” Ty Kelly tells TODAY.com. “I want my kids to know that parents follow the rules and we are trying to raise them right. In this situation, we bent the rules and I don’t want that to be my legacy.”

He acknowledged to TODAY.com that he was defensive in his apology video.

“Nobody likes to be told that you’re a terrible parent or ‘I wish that your son would have died on that ride,'” he tells TODAY.com. “People were trying to get my wife fired from her (nursing) job or saying they would call CPS (Child Protective Services) to get our kids taken away from us or hoping we’d get banned from Disney World.”

Ty says Haley has received threatening calls, but she has not been fired from her job. The situation, however, has “gone way too far.

With influence comes responsibility, and we take that seriously. It’s a privilege to have the platforms we do, and we’d NEVER want someone else to get hurt from an idea from one of our videos. With that being said, we’ve decided to take anything down related to the Disney shoe video. We hope that in time, you’ll see that we are serious about the content we put out for the public to see, and we’re committed to being more careful and intentional with our posts moving forward. We want our platforms to feel like home, and a safe place for you to come and unwind, be uplifted, inspired and hopefully entertained. We love you all. #thekellyfam

True to their word, the original hack video, as well as the follow-up non-apology apology, have been taken down.

While it is always disappointing to take your young child to Disney, only to see them not be tall enough for the Disney theme park rides they want to go on, Disney has a reason for why you have to be a certain height. Disney wants everyone who visits their theme parks to have a safe and wonderful time. It is important to follow the rules, and if your child does not fit on the attraction, then they don’t ride.
