Each and every movie falls into a certain genre — from comedy to drama, historical fiction, and more. Sometimes there are movies that fit into more than one category, like a dramedy (drama/comedy). But what do you call a film that could be a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Well, if you’re a Disney fan, then you call it Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Nightmare Before Christmas came out in 1993 and told the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who accidentally finds himself in Christmas Town. Jack cannot get enough of the snow, the lights, the presents, and “Sandy Claws” (AKA Santa). Jack decides that he wants to be Sandy Claws and bring Christmas to the residents of Halloween Town.

Over the years, fans have been begging for a sequel, and there have even been rumors that one was in the works. However, nothing has happened on the front and Disney is not actively working on one. And, if they ever do decide to make one, it looks like they won’t have one of the most important people with them to help — Tim Burton.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Burton revealed that The Nightmare Before Christmas is one movie he will never make a sequel to.
“To me the movie is very important. I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that sh*t, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power-plant that wants to take my land.”

Not wanting to ruin the original story is only one reason that Burton has no interest in making a sequel film. Burton worked with Disney for years, even being on the animation team for classic films like The Fox and the Hound (1981), Tron (1982), and The Black Cauldron (1985). He has also directed and produced a number of Disney films — James and the Giant Peach (1986), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Dumbo (2019), and more.

However, Burton does reportedly not like the direction Disney has taken in recent years. In 2022, he attended the Lumiere Film Festival in France and was asked about working with Disney in the future. The director and producer didn’t seem too enthused by the idea, saying, “It’s gotten to be very homogenized, very consolidated. There’s less room for different types of things.”

Burton is not the only one who feels that Disney is not heading in the best direction when it comes to their new movies. Disney seems to be focusing more on sequels and live-action remakes, while being slower to release entirely new stories.
Disney just released its newest animated movie, Wish, which is a new story. But it looks like the next original story will not come out until 2025, when Disney and Pixar release Elio. Until then, Disney will release sequels, prequels, and remakes, including Inside Out 2 (2024), Deadpool 3 (2024), Mufasa: The Lion King (2024), Captain America: Brave New World (2025), and Snow White (2025).
