What’s Next for Tower of Terror? Disney Announces Stunning (But Extremely Different) Area Updates

Disney has revealed ambitious plans to transform the area surrounding one version of the Tower of Terror.

Known for its chilling art deco design and immersive storytelling, the Tower of Terror remains one of Disney’s most iconic attractions. Now, the space around this legendary ride is set to evolve into a serene yet imaginative setting that adds a new layer to the park’s growing identity.

Tower of Terror: A Thrilling Legacy

The Tower of Terror’s reputation precedes it as one of Disney’s most celebrated attractions. Its ominous façade and Twilight Zone-themed narrative invite guests into a world of mystery and thrills, culminating in randomized drop sequences that never fail to exhilarate.

While versions of the ride once existed across three Disney parks globally, the closure of the California Adventure location in 2017—to make way for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!—ignited debates among Disney enthusiasts. Despite the success of the Marvel rework, fans remain protective of the original version in Orlando, fearing a potential IP overlay.

A New Chapter Begins

Recent announcements from Disney have provided clarity on the future of the Tower of Terror’s Paris iteration. Rather than altering the ride itself, the focus has shifted to revitalizing its surrounding area.

DLP Report confirmed that the land will be reimagined as Gazebo Garden, a picturesque space inspired by English-style gardens. This elegant setting will offer entertainment opportunities while enhancing the thematic experience for guests.

The area behind Tower of Terror will be (very imaginatively) called Gazebo Garden, “where guests can enjoy a range of entertainment in an elegant setting, inspired by English-style gardens”. And this is where the Willow Oak is headed.

The concept art for Gazebo Garden showcases a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of the classic Mary Poppins (1964) aesthetic. At its heart will be a towering 30-meter Willow Oak tree, which promises to be a striking centerpiece for the new area. The addition of such a significant natural feature reflects Disney’s commitment to blending storytelling with environmental design.

Balancing Themes in a Growing Park

The decision to introduce an English garden theme next to the Tower of Terror has sparked discussion about thematic consistency. The attraction sits on the very edge of Avengers Campus, raising questions about how these distinct styles will coexist. However, this move aligns with Walt Disney Studios Park’s ongoing transformation into Disney Adventure World, a reimagined park that prioritizes eclectic and immersive realms.

Future expansions include a World of Frozen, a land inspired by The Lion King (1994), and a new Tangled (2010) attraction. Disney has described this evolution as a shift from “how it’s done” soundstages to “celebratory theaters and adventures that come to life in immersive worlds.” This broader vision underscores a commitment to creating dynamic, multifaceted experiences for visitors at a park that’s long been lambasted as the runt of the Disney park litter.

Gazebo Garden represents a significant step in redefining the space around Tower of Terror while preserving the ride’s iconic status. By introducing a blend of serenity and whimsy, Disney aims to enhance the park’s appeal without compromising its thrilling core. As these updates unfold, fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how Disney balances nostalgia with innovation.
