Am I losing my sense of smell, or is Marvel about to deliver another buddy comedy that is actually heartwarming and funny?
On Tuesday, April 11, Marvel Studios dropped a trailer for its upcoming film The Marvels, and to my shock, it looks like fans will finally get a good old-fashioned girl-power buddy comedy that relieves fans and those who enjoy “girl-power” action movies of the normal prerequisites so everybody from the die-hard comic readers to Charlie’s Angels fans can enjoy it.
Starring Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan), Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), and Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury), Marvel’s The Marvels sets up a movie that actually looks like it will be funny and fun. There is a “Comedy of Errors” aspect that follows a space mission accident that causes Monica, Kamala, and Carol to all be connected, sharing the same powers but also somehow causing each other to swap places from anywhere across time and space. This strange connection requires them to work together and further instills Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There were initial fears that this Marvel movie was not going to be fun at all. Larson’s Captain Marvel has already received immense backlash since she suddenly emerged on the scene to take down Thanos after Infinity War at the end of the Avengers Saga, and there has been growing concern over the accessibility of these movies as the connected Marvel movies and TV shows continue to grow as we move through “Phase Four,” “Phase Five,” or whatever stage we’re at now.
But this movie seems different. I am aware that this is only the first trailer, but it seems to actually welcome new audiences without them having to see Captain Marvel or Ms. Marvel or any of the previous movies from Marvel Studios. Of course, there will still be the added benefit of knowing all of the background information as the supporting cast appears to tie in the Thor series as Tessa Thompson reprises her role as Valkyrie as well as Gemma Chan most likely reprising her previous role in Marvel’s Eternals.
Things have been disappointing for Marvel in recent years, but who knows? Maybe this movie can help turn things around.
Originally promised to be released last November, the Captain Marvel sequel arrives in theaters on November 10, 2023.
