Anyone who remembers the early days of Wednesday might remember how many different directions the Netflix series seemed prepared to explore.
Season 1 established Nevermore Academy, introduced Wednesday Addams to a new group of friends and enemies, and planted several storylines that appeared capable of lasting for years. Not all of them survived.
Now, with Season 3 officially in production, one of those early ideas looks increasingly unlikely to regain the importance it once had.
Season 2 didn't eliminate it completely. A few moments kept the possibility alive, even if the series refused to fully commit. But Jenna Ortega has made her position on this particular part of Wednesday's life clear for years.
That could tell fans plenty about what comes next.
Netflix Is Already Working on What's Next
Netflix officially started production on Wednesday Season 3 near Dublin in February 2026.
Ortega is back alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, and other returning cast members. The expanding cast also includes Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer.
Exactly when audiences will see those actors together remains uncertain.
Netflix hasn't announced an official Season 3 premiere date. External reports have suggested the series could potentially return in late 2027, but Netflix hasn't confirmed a date.
The company also continues to keep major Season 3 story details secret. Still, the direction established over the first two seasons gives fans some clues about what might not become a major focus.
An Early Storyline Quickly Became Complicated
Season 1 gave Wednesday an unusual problem: two potential love interests.
Tyler Galpin initially appeared interested in Wednesday, while Xavier Thorpe also tried getting closer to her. Wednesday didn't exactly approach either relationship like a conventional teenage romance, but the series nevertheless created a love triangle around its leading character.
Of course, Tyler's story became considerably darker.
Wednesday eventually discovered that Tyler was the Hyde responsible for brutal attacks. Xavier, meanwhile, became one of Wednesday's suspects as she tried to solve the mystery.
By Season 2, the dynamic had changed again.
Percy Hynes White didn't return as Xavier. Allegations of sexual misconduct had surfaced online against the actor in 2023, which Hynes White publicly denied. Netflix did not publicly identify those allegations as the reason for his departure. Within the series, Xavier transferred to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland.
That effectively removed one side of the original triangle.
But Tyler remained.
Season 2 Didn't Completely Close the Door
Wednesday and Tyler didn't simply forget everything that happened between them.
Season 2 continued giving the characters an unusual connection, even though the show didn't restore their previous relationship. Showrunner Alfred Gough has described something “unspoken” between them and said sparks still fly when they share scenes.
Those comments leave plenty of room for interpretation.
The writers could theoretically explore Tyler gaining control of his Hyde abilities as he navigates his complicated connection to Wednesday. Wednesday could also face the question of whether she could ever forgive someone who deceived her and caused tremendous destruction.
That doesn't mean Season 3 will follow either path.
In fact, Ortega's previous comments suggest fans probably shouldn't suddenly expect the series to make Wednesday's love life a major priority again.
Jenna Ortega Has Never Hidden Her Opinion
Ortega openly criticized the love triangle after Season 1.
She said the storyline “made no sense” for Wednesday and discussed pushing back on creative decisions she felt didn't fit the character.
Season 2 subsequently took a different approach.
The show removed a conventional love interest from Wednesday's story and leaned further into its darker material. Ortega welcomed that decision.
Her behind-the-scenes influence had also grown by then. Ortega became an executive producer beginning with Season 2, giving her greater involvement in the creative process.
That doesn't guarantee Tyler and Wednesday won't continue sharing complicated moments. Gough's comments suggest their unusual dynamic remains part of the story.
Turning that connection into a traditional relationship, however, would represent a much bigger move.
Season 3 Could Continue Down a Different Road
The first season of Wednesday mixed several ingredients together. There was horror, mystery, supernatural danger, friendship, family drama, and a surprising amount of teenage romance.
The balance has changed since then.
Wednesday's relationships with the people around her can continue developing without putting another boyfriend at the center of her story. Season 3 can explore her family, friendships, mysteries, and personal growth while still leaving room for Tyler to complicate matters.
Maybe their history never completely disappears. Considering everything they've been through, that would hardly be surprising.
But Season 1's love triangle no longer looks like the blueprint for Wednesday's future.
And as Ortega's influence on the character has grown, the series appears increasingly comfortable allowing Wednesday Addams to remain exactly what she has always been: complicated enough on her own.
