For nearly 25 years, The View has been airing on ABC, with strong women talking about the hot topics of the day. The women all have different views, and while they may not always agree, they have the space to voice their opinions. As the world has become more passionate about things they believe and become even more politically divided, the disagreements have gotten more heated. That has gotten some of The View cohosts in hot water. Mainly longtime host and actress Whoopi Goldberg.

Recently, Goldberg and the other hosts — Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Sarah Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin — were discussing former President Donald Trump’s inappropriate relationship with adult film star Stormy Daniels. It was then that Goldberg used an incredibly offensive phrase. Goldberg mentioned those who thought that Trump had the election stolen from him:

“The people who still believe that he got, you know, gy—d somehow in the election, will still believe that he cared enough about his wife to pay the…” the 67-year-old said, pausing to burp in the middle of her thought. “…that was gas… money from his personal thing.”

The backlash was swift, as the term that Goldberg used is derived from an offensive term for the Romani people. While the offensive word was once commonly used by people to mean cheated or deceived, it has since been recognized for the disrespectful word it is.

Not long after the segment aired, The View sent out a video tweet from Goldberg in which she apologized for her choice of words.

“You know, when you’re a certain age, you use words that you know from when you’re a kid or you remember saying, and that’s what I did today, and I shouldn’t have. I should have thought about it a little longer before I said it, but I didn’t, and I should have said ‘cheated,’ and I used another word, and I’m really, really sorry.”

This is not the first time that Goldberg has landed in hot water for things that she has said on the show. In early 2022, Goldberg caught a lot of heat for saying that the Holocaust was not about race. While Goldberg didn’t initially think that she was in the wrong, she later apologized, saying that she didn’t realize the Jewish people were a race, but she had since been taught about it.

Not long after Goldberg issued her apology, ABC President Kim Godwin announced that Goldberg had been suspended from the show for two weeks. Then, months later, Goldberg seemed to once again double down on her original comments. She then issued ANOTHER apology, in which she said she was merely recounting what happened the first time, not defending what she said.

While some who commented on Goldberg’s apology video called her out for her use of the word, many others admitted that they did not know that the word had originated from a derogatory term. They said that it was a word they had grown up using as well, but would stop, now that they knew that it had a derogatory beginning.
