A Disney vacation usually requires a spreadsheet, a flexible savings plan, and nerves of steel. But in Hong Kong, some lucky visitors will soon experience the magic—without spending a cent.
Hong Kong Disneyland has confirmed it will give away 200,000 park tickets to local charities and NGOs as part of its 20th-anniversary celebration. The move doubles the park’s typical annual allotment and offers recipients a rare gift in the world of theme parks: free admission.
A Different Kind of Disney Park
Located on Lantau Island, Hong Kong Disneyland has always been something of an outlier. It’s the smallest of Disney’s resorts, with just one park and three hotels: Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney Explorers Lodge, and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.
When it opened in 2005, it was a big bet in a competitive market—and it struggled to find its footing. Early reviews noted the park’s modest scale and lack of marquee attractions. Attendance remained lukewarm, and for more than a decade, the park operated at a loss.
The challenges kept coming. Political unrest in 2019 disrupted local tourism. The COVID-19 pandemic hit even harder, shuttering the park for months at a time and limiting international travel. At one point, Hong Kong Disneyland had reported losses for nine straight years.
Still, Disney didn’t give up. In 2023, it opened World of Frozen—the company’s first land entirely devoted to Frozen (2013)—while it also completed a years-long transformation of the castle in 2020. Slowly, attendance began to rebound. Local guests returned. Regional tourism picked up. Now, as the park approaches its 20-year milestone, the outlook is significantly brighter.
Free Tickets, New Shows, and Unique Disney Magic
The newly announced ticket giveaway will allow 200,000 people through NGOs and registered charities to visit Hong Kong Disneyland between July 2025 and June 2026. Organizations can apply through the park’s website until April 30.
It’s not the first time Hong Kong Disneyland has offered complimentary entry to specific communities. In January, the park worked with the Li Ka Shing Foundation to distribute over 4,000 tickets to domestic helpers, who also received meal vouchers and transit credits for their visit.
But the ticket giveaway is just one piece of the park's anniversary festivities. The “Most Magical Party of All” will include Friendtastic!, a new daytime parade with 11 floats and a full character lineup—Hong Kong’s first in years.
The popular “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular is getting new scenes, drones, and castle projections. A castle-front stage show will debut with Mickey, Duffy, and other fan-favorite characters. Hotel experiences, specialty food, and limited-edition merchandise are also in the mix.
And while fans were hopeful, Paint the Night—the beloved nighttime parade—won’t return just yet. (It is, however, headed back to California for Disneyland’s 70th anniversary.)
Hong Kong Disneyland also boasts some of the most inventive and original attractions in the Disney Parks lineup. Mystic Manor—a trackless dark ride through an enchanted museum, serving as the park's equivalent of Haunted Mansion—is widely considered one of Disney’s best. Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars offers a wild ride that blends storytelling and thrills, while Iron Man Experience brings Marvel to life in a uniquely Hong Kong setting. For seasoned fans, these exclusives make the park well worth the trip.
Looking Ahead
The 20th-anniversary celebration will officially launch with a pre-party on April 17, welcoming more than 550 guests from across Asia, including media, influencers, and superfans. For many, it will be a first look at how far the park has come.
