Silver Dollar City has confirmed a major change that’s going to hit longtime visitors right in the nostalgia.
The Branson theme park announced that its classic runaway mine train coaster, Thunderation, will officially close after the 2026 season. The attraction has been a fixture at Silver Dollar City for more than 30 years, and its retirement marks the end of one of the park’s most memorable eras.
Thunderation Set for Final Season in 2026
Thunderation first opened in 1993 and quickly became one of Silver Dollar City’s most well-known attractions. According to the park, the coaster spans more than 3,000 feet of track and reaches speeds of around 48 miles per hour.
Over the decades, it has carried more than 27 million riders, which is an impressive statistic for any ride, especially one that has remained popular through multiple generations of park expansions.
Silver Dollar City confirmed that the ride’s final day of operation is scheduled for January 2, 2027, meaning 2026 will serve as its official farewell season.

Why This Closure Matters
Theme parks retire attractions all the time, but some rides feel different when they leave.
Thunderation is one of those.
It wasn’t just another coaster added to fill out the lineup. For many guests, it was their first “real” thrill ride at Silver Dollar City. It’s also been one of the park’s most consistent attractions—always recognizable, always classic, and always tied into the park’s rugged Ozarks theming.
Even visitors who don’t consider it the park’s most intense ride often describe it as one of the most nostalgic.
The Park Teases Future Plans
Silver Dollar City hasn’t officially announced what will replace Thunderation, but the park has hinted that the land could be used for something new tied to the Marvel Cave Mining Company, referencing “geological surveys” in the area.
That kind of language strongly suggests a future project is being set up, even if details are still under wraps.
A Farewell Season Is Already Being Planned
The park is planning a full sendoff for the coaster, including a ceremony on March 13 and additional announcements throughout the 2026 season.
For guests, the message is clear: if Thunderation is a ride you’ve always meant to experience, the countdown has officially begun. The coaster may be closing, but Silver Dollar City is giving fans one last chance to take that final run before the track goes silent.
