A British politician has landed himself in some very hot water after forcing staff to paint over Disney characters on the walls of a child refugee center because he wanted to make sure the refugee center didn’t seem too “welcoming” for the children.

Too “Welcoming” for “Terrified” Children

According to The Mirror, Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick ordered the eradication of Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Baloo murals on the walls of the refugee center, which is an establishment that is meant to provide aid for children who have just come to the country.

Apparently, “Mr. Jenrick is claimed to have made the remark after seeing the loveable characters on the wall at an asylum reception center in Dover, Kent.”

“The victims of this are the sort of victims who really can’t stand up for themselves,” renowned cartoonist Guy Venables pointed out. Apparently, many cartoonists are stepping up “to replace the missing murals” after Jenrick forced this “evil” order on the refugee center’s staff.

Are Disney Villains the Replacement?

According to Charlotte Khan from the refugee charity called Care4Calais, “If Mickey Mouse is too ‘welcoming’ for ministers, the question is what will they replace him with in order to inflict more fear on traumatized asylum-seeking children – Maleficent? Ursula? Maybe even Cruella herself?”

Who Are “the Real Villains”?

“The real villains in this sorry tale are Robert Jenrick and the rest of this heartless bunch that call themselves ministers,” Khan declared.

Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, added that these Disney murals were specifically meant to help “absolutely terrified” children.

Solomon also declared that Jenrick’s order “demonstrates that the hostile environment has become so entrenched, that today we have lost sight of humanity” — and according to Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister, Stephen Kinnock, “this is a sign of a chaotic government in crisis, whose failing approach means all they have left is tough talk and cruel and callous policies.”
