Something new is coming to Disney PhotoPass at Walt Disney World, and Disney isn't ready to tell us exactly what it is just yet.
Disney recently teased that guests can expect “even more PhotoPass attraction magic” in the future, telling fans to stay tuned for what's coming next.
It's a short tease, but it raises plenty of questions.
What attraction is Disney talking about? Is this coming to one park or several? Is Disney adding a traditional ride photo, or is the company preparing something different?
Right now, none of those questions have answers.
But Disney's decision to specifically mention attraction-related PhotoPass content gives us something interesting to watch.
PhotoPass Continues to Grow at Disney World
Most Walt Disney World guests are probably familiar with PhotoPass photographers.
They're positioned around the parks, especially near the major landmarks everyone wants in their vacation pictures. Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, and the Tree of Life are among the locations where guests can have Disney photographers capture their group.
In total, Disney PhotoPass operates at more than 175 locations around Walt Disney World.
But that's only one part of the service.
PhotoPass is also integrated into attractions, character experiences, and Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Instead of guests needing to take every picture themselves, Disney can capture moments that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to photograph.
Attraction photos are a perfect example.
You can't exactly stop in the middle of a ride and ask everyone to pose for a family picture. An automatic PhotoPass camera can capture those reactions without guests doing anything.
Now Disney apparently believes there's room to do even more.
What Could Disney Be Planning?
Disney hasn't answered that question yet.
The simplest possibility would be another attraction receiving PhotoPass capabilities. Walt Disney World has plenty of rides, and not every experience includes an automatic photo.
Disney could also be preparing changes for an attraction that already offers photography.
Perhaps there will be a different photo angle, a new digital effect, or a video component. There are several directions Disney could take the service.
But until Disney provides more information, it's important to separate those possibilities from what has actually been announced.
All Disney has confirmed is that additional PhotoPass attraction magic is coming.
The company hasn't named an attraction or provided a launch date.
Another PhotoPass Addition Just Arrived
Disney's tease also comes shortly after another PhotoPass addition debuted at Walt Disney World.
Earlier this month, Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs introduced an experience featuring Frozen (2013) and Toy Story (1995) backgrounds.
While Disney hasn't connected that addition to its attraction tease, both developments show that PhotoPass isn't standing still.
That's particularly interesting when you consider how important digital photos have become to a Disney vacation.
Guests can take hundreds of pictures on their phones during a trip, but there are still certain moments Disney is in a better position to capture. Ride reactions are one of them.
Expanding attraction photography could give guests even more of those moments.
Disney Isn't Giving Away the Surprise Yet
At this point, the mystery is almost the entire story.
Disney wants guests to know that something is coming without revealing exactly what they'll receive.
It could end up being a relatively small addition involving one attraction. It could also become a larger expansion involving several rides or a new PhotoPass feature.
We simply don't know yet.
What we do know is that Disney specifically chose to tease attraction-related PhotoPass changes rather than making a general statement about the service.
That suggests another announcement is coming.
For guests who enjoy collecting ride photos or looking back at everyone's reactions after a long Disney day, it could be a fun addition.
Now comes the waiting game.
Disney says more PhotoPass attraction magic is on the way. The next question is what Disney has planned — and where guests will be able to experience it.
