The year is 2009. Miley Cyrus‘ “Party in the U.S.A” is released and life is good for your average tween. This is the heyday of the Disney Channel, having hit after hit. Though it seemed the company’s record label would very much disagree.
The record label every Disney Channel star was signed to in the 2000s (Hilary, Miley, Demi, Selena, you name it) was Hollywood Records. Just revealed by the Jonas Brothers’ upcoming memoir Blood, the label told the band they were “washed up” and “needed life experience” in 2009. The label executives went so far as to criticize the brothers’ (famous for wearing purity rings) religious beliefs, saying they should “have sex.”
The Jonas Brothers shared this shocking revelation at their March 16, 2023 concert at the Marquis Theatre in New York. This was part of their five-night exclusive Broadway residency, where they would play each of their five albums in their entirety, followed by their greatest hits. March 16 was the night for their 2009 album Lines, Vines, and Trying Times. The show had no opening act but “a reading from the book” or their soon-to-be-released memoir, Blood.
There, three young female actors played the role of each brother and discussed the hardships Kevin, Joe and Nick faced at this time. The actors claimed that their former label met with the brothers’ father and dropped the bombshell that they would not release a second single for the brothers’ new album, citing the record sales were just not there. The album was number one in the country.
The executive, who was not named, went on to state that the brothers were rather yesterday’s news and should take a “three-year break” in hopes of being relevant again. That is when the executive suggested the purity-ring-wearing brothers break their promise to God. Their youngest brother, Nick was only 16 at the time. The brothers have since parted ways with Hollywood Records, and all are happily married with children.
You can pre-save the Jonas Brothers’ new album with their new label titled, appropriately, The Album.
