Hardcore Disney Fanatics will already be aware that Scar the lion — aka the Disney villain from The Lion KingĀ (1994) and the uncle of Simba the protagonist — was a misunderstood character whose villainy stemmed from being mistreated by Mufasa (and other lions aside from his brother) as a lion cub.

Taka’s Traumas

However, Scar (who became burdened by the nickname “Scar” after a buffalo attack in his youth) and his mistreatment actually contained even more depth than Disney fans previously thought!

In a new comic about Scar from Dynamite Comics, called Scar #2, readers are given a closer look at Scar’s traumas and the pain that caused him to team up with hyenas in an effort to overthrow his brother Mufasa and take over the Pride Lands in Africa.

There are two previous backstories about Scar that have been shared; the backstory for Scar (aka Taka) that comes from the originalĀ Lion KingĀ franchise, and the backstory for Scar (named Askari in this version) that comes from the Disney Junior series calledĀ The Lion Guard.

Buffalo or Cobra?

The cape buffalo attack and Taka’s subsequent nickname came from the book A Tale of Two Brothers, which was part of the Lion King: Six New Adventures series and coincided with the original Lion King films.

The second backstory involved a more fantastical element, in which Askari was given a mystical “Roar” and served as the leader of the esteemed Lion Guard. In this tale, Askari was bitten by a cobra in a trap that was set by an enemy lion.

In this version of the story, Mufasa was cruel to Askari after the attack and began calling him “Scar” to be hurtful.

In the previous version, Taka had named himself “Scar” on purpose after the buffalo attack.

In the new comic from Dynamite Comics (which is the sequel to Scar #1 and was created by Chuck Brown and Trevor Fraley), both backstories seem relevant for Taka or Askari.

The Scar that we know from The Lion KingĀ is shown in the comic walking through the infamous Elephant Graveyard where Simba, Nala, and Zazu would later have a run-in with three hyenas.

Scar’s Real “Home”

In the comic, Scar explains to a vulture that the Elephant Graveyard is actually a haven and a “home” to him, and has been since he was just a little lion cub. The comic emphasizes Scar’s sad backstory, showing an image of a very young Scar alongside his current adult self.

ā€œSo many memories. I used to run away here to be alone,” Scar said mournfully in the comic. “This wretched place feels more like home than Pride Rock.ā€

AsĀ Screenrant put it, “the Elephant Graveyard in Disneyā€™s The Lion King isnā€™t just an inhospitable area outside the Pride Lands ā€“ it’s also Scarā€™s original home away from home.”

Did it ever occur to you while watching the originalĀ Lion KingĀ and seeing the Elephant Graveyard that Scar might have a special connection to this location in the Pride Lands?

Did you already know about Scar’s competing backstories and his traumas?
