But another Walt Disney World ride that’s a roller coaster and a classic fan favorite is Space Mountain. The futuristic/space-themed roller coaster takes guests on an exciting ride in the dark.

Space Mountain is one of the few attractions built at Magic Kingdom Park first and added to Disneyland Park. Space Mountain was so popular that it’s been included in many Disney Parks worldwide.

However, considering the original was built almost 50 years ago, a Space Mountain breakdown or malfunction is not uncommon.

Breakdown And Evacuation

In a recent video with the lights on inside the iconic ride’s interior, cast members can be spotted evacuating guests down the lift hill staircase. The video was taken while riding the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.

As a Disney Dining writer (who captured the video) reported, Space Mountain was shut down soon after. A second video shows the inside of Space Mountain with its lights on.

As of this writing, exactly what cause of the Space Mountain breakdown was. However, the idea of having to evacuate a roller coaster on the lift hill is always a nerve-wracking thought.

Although the height of Space Mountain’s lift hill is not as massive as Expedition Everest or as tall as the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it can still be scary.

Even though the largest drop in Space Mountain is only 26′ (not big in terms of roller coasters), the lift hill is 90′ tall. It may not seem as scary in the video, but that makes the lift hill almost double the drop on Splash Mountain/Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (which is 50′).

About Steven

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
