Halloween has come and gone, and some people are already whipping out the Christmas decorations. But one actress is still dealing with the fallout of her choice of Halloween costume.

On Halloween, Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire posted photos of her and her friends in their costumes. Hampshire had chosen to dress up as Johnny Depp and her friend was Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard. In the photos, the friend dressed as Amber Heard was always looking upset and distressed. The two also had props, including a wine bottle and a piece of fake poop.

Hampshire’s post was only up for about 10 minutes before she took it down because of all the backlash she was getting. She was called out by a ton of people for making fun of domestic violence.

During Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial, Heard accused Depp of sexually assaulting and abusing her with a bottle of alcohol. Whether you believe what Heard said, a lot of people took issue with Hampshire thinking it was appropriate to joke about the accusations.

The day after Halloween, Hampshire went on her personal Instagram page and issued an apology.

I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions.

In the future I will do better. I’m so sorry.

Hampshire’s Halloween costume was very divisive, with some calling it funny, and saying that she didn’t need to apologize.

I don’t think your intention was to make fun of domestic abuse…I think the intention was to make fun of the spectacle the trial became. I thought it was funny

Then, there were some who thought that Hampshire wasn’t actually sorry for what she had done, she was sorry that it didn’t go over well.

Nope. You’re sorry due to the backlash. YOU posted it. YOU dressed up. YOU used props. YOU posed for multiple pictures. I cannot believe that you’re now sorry for any other reason only people are upset with you. If no one reacted, you wouldn’t think you did anything wrong.

The defamation trial between the Pirates of the Caribbean star and his ex-wife took place for six weeks in early 2022. Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation, and Heard countersued for $100 million. She also claimed defamation. There were many disturbing allegations made during the trial, including claims of domestic abuse and drug use.

In the end, the jury decided that Heard and Depp were “mutual abusers” who both defamed each other. Heard was found more at fault and was ordered to pay Depp $10 million. Depp was ordered to pay Heard $2 million.

Throughout the trial, Depp received much more support than Heard, with his supporters showing up outside the courthouse. They supported him even more when a tape was played during the trial where Heard admitted to abusing Depp. She is heard on the recording saying that no one would believe him if he decided to go to the police.

Because of all the backlash Heard received before, during, and after the trial, her character Mera was largely removed from her upcoming film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. She does not have any upcoming projects after that.

After Heard made her accusations of domestic violence against Depp, he was dropped by multiple studios and taken off of multiple projects. He was dropped by Warner Bros. and was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. He was also reportedly dropped by Disney as Captain jack Sparrow for its sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
