Disney has been facing a staggering amount of negativity lately — and apparently, not even a heartwarming video about Walt Disney’s legacy can ward off the Walt Disney Company’s haters!
During the recent 2023 Annual Shareholders Meeting, there were many controversial announcements made that detracted from the 100th Disney anniversary and the meeting’s opening video that celebrated said anniversary.
Disney’s 100th anniversary is being called “Disney100”, and decor is already up and ready in Disneyland (albeit with some embarrassing errors included).
The opening video looks like standard Disney fare: it focuses on the “Disney magic”, Walt Disney’s legacy, and the many popular Disney movies that have become famous worldwide. However, one thing is really not normal when it comes to this anniversary video, and that is people’s response!
“100 years ago, a tradition began with you,” Disney wrote in a Tweet accompanying the video. “And you have continuously thanked us,” one Twitter user promptly replied, “by raising your prices so high that the average family can’t afford to go.”
Another Disney fan was also quick to point out (and complain about) the fact that “apart from brief clips of ‘The Sword In The Stone’, ‘Fantasia’ and ‘Snow White’ everything else was either more recent or franchises the big corp purchased rather than much Walt actually achieved in his lifetime”.
“Some legacy being appreciated here,” the film critic remarked.
Another Twitter user seemed very unimpressed by Disney’s 100th celebration, complaining that “it’s always some anniversary” at Disney.
One financially-savvy Disney Gues cleverly asked for a “Disney world ticket giveaway” to celebrate the occasion, since Disney’s consistent increase in ticket prices has alienated many Disney World or Disneyland Guests (especially since other iconic theme parks cost much less per person per day).

Some Disney fans’ disgruntled comments might seem normal, but the fact that these complaints have become commonplace on happy Disney social media posts is huge news in and of itself!
We have seen more and more data indicating that many Disney fans are swiftly leaving the Disney fandom and choosing to spend their vacations elsewhere — or choosing to boycott Disney movies that they feel are low-quality.
The constant presence of some negative comments like these is a stark reminder of just how drastically Disney’s reputation has shifted in recent years (even after the return of Disney CEO Bob Iger, who was supposed to make things better after he replaced former CEO Bob Chapek)!
Did you notice this aberration, even if news like Iger’s takedown of Governor Ron DeSantis and the plans for yet another live-action Disney movie remake overshadowed the negative video responses?
