Bookworms Slam Disney for Abandoning Long-Awaited Movie Adaptation

gallagher girl book series with cancelled graphic

TikToker @readsbyalex, who recommends books and specializes in the fantasy and romance genres, recently threw some shade at Disney for failing to produce a very, very long-awaited Disney movie — and the author of the books that were meant to become films, Ally Carter, has just thrown her own hat into the ring!

Running Late By 18 Years?

“I have a bone to pick with Disney,” Alex said in a TikTok video, holding up the first book (I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You) in the hugely-successful Gallagher Girls series. “This series was my ride or die growing up. It came out in 2006.”

“On the back, it says optioned for film by Walt Disney Pictures,” Alex explained, pointing out the phrase on the back cover of the book. “Where’s the film, Disney?” she asked, exasperated. Many other Gallagher Girls fans chimed in, expressing their discontent in the comments.

“Disney’s loss,” one passionate reader wrote. “I patiently waited every year in my teens for a movie announcement and was so sad when nothing happened,” another fan confessed.

Disney’s Drama Behind the Scenes

The author of the Gallagher Girls series, which focuses on a secret all-girls boarding school for spies and features everything from high school romances to fast-paced international adventures, quickly chimed in on Instagram.

“I could tell you stories,” Ally Carter said in her social media post (shown below), making an ominous face.

Carter wrote the following in the video’s caption: “The Gallagher Girls were optioned for film before the book even came out — way back in 2005. Since then, it’s been set up five more times. And, yeah, I could tell you stories.”

“I won’t,” Carter admitted reluctantly, “But I could.”

“We may never have a movie,” Carter said with a distinct hint of finality. Unfortunately, Disney’s optioning of the series most likely meant that Carter also missed out on offers from other film studios who would have actually followed through with plans for the film!

Fans Have Officially Lost Hope

The author did thank her readers for their support, however.

The Gallagher Girls series consists of six books, not including additional novellas or prequels, and many readers felt that the series was just as rife with potential for a movie adaptation as a book series like The Princess Diaries was.

Ally Carter has also written other popular books, such as the Heist Society series about a group of young international thieves and a brand-new adult spy thriller called The Blonde Identity.
