Disney’s Aladdin star Will Smith’s former partner, Jada Pinkett Smith, recently shocked the world with revelations about the pair’s relationship.
Will Smith is one of the most iconic names in the Hollywood industry; in fact, he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have been termed “Hollywood’s Most Powerful Couple” and have been the center of attention and admiration for their seemingly incredible relationship for many years. The pair’s children, Jaden Smith and Willow Smith, also have their feet in the film and music industry.
However, recently, Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, revealed that the couple have actually been separated for seven years and had been living independent lives of each other all this while.
What’s Going On With Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith?
In an exclusive interview with Hoda Kotb for NBC News, Pinkett-Smith confirmed that she and Will Smith have been separated and have lived “completely separate lives” since 2016. This is almost 20 years after they married in 1997.
That’s not all. Pinkett Smith clarified that the couple is still legally married, and they haven’t gotten divorced on paper. However, when Kotb clarified that they were “divorced” in spirit, Pinkett Smith didn’t deny it.
The interview comes as part of the publicity Pinkett Smith is working on for the release of her memoir, Worthy, which just came out yesterday, October 17. In her memoir, Pinkett Smith also shares more about her and Will Smith’s relationship—how it started and where it stands now.
On being asked why the couple had waited this long to share the truth, Jada Pinkett Smith explained, “It came down to ‘just not being ready yet … Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.'”
Naturally, fans were completely shocked by the revelation since the couple had seemed to be going steady this entire time, and the news is especially shocking considering Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022. Will Smith famously told Chris Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.”
Jada Pinkett Smith even addressed the Oscars slap, explaining that it reaffirmed their marriage, “When I was sitting at the Oscars, it clicked in. As soon as I was like, ‘Oh snap, you hit Chris?’ I was like, I’m riding with you. I didn’t come into this place as your wife, but I’m leaving here as your wife because we got a storm we’re going to have to deal with together. I am not gonna leave your side.”

Of course, with revelations as big as this, some might be waiting for Will Smith to make a statement, and the veteran actor pulled through with an “official statement” in his signature way. He shared a video on social media where he made it clear in no uncertain terms that none of this was anyone else’s business.
