We all have those shows that we grew up on. We fell in love with the characters because we found ourselves in similar situations, but unlike in real life, the characters would always find a way to solve those problems and make everything better in the span of 30 minutes.

Eventually, however, we grew up and moved away from that cartoon or Disney Channel show that helped to create our vision of the world. But something in the back of our mind always makes us wonder what happened to those characters we once loved.

Thanks to reboots, fans are finding out what happened to their favorite characters. In 2019, Lizzie McGuire fans got their wish for a reboot of the Hilary Duff Disney Channel show. But their hopes were dashed in 2020 when Duff took to social media to tell fans that the Lizzie McGuire reboot on Disney Plus would not happen.

Now, we’re learning exactly what happened. Writer Jonathan Hurwitz took to TicTok to explain why the revival didn’t happen.

When the show found Lizzie McGuire, she was living in New York City, working as an interior designer, and dating a chef. In the first episode, Lizzie finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her, and she returns home to California and finds animated Lizzie waiting for her.

In the second episode, Lizzie reconnects with Gordo, played by Adam Lamberg. He is engaged, and his future wife is pregnant. The episode ended with Lizzie getting a text from Ethan Craft.

The first two episodes were filmed, and a script was written for the third episode. But it was that third episode that executives at Disney had a problem with.

Hurwitz said:

Episode three wasn’t filmed, but there was a script for it. Lizzie wakes up in Ethan’s bed, in his water polo T-shirt. Animated Lizzie pops up and she has this little checklist, like a to-do list, and Ethan is on the list and she checks it off. I think she says something like, ‘checked that box — dramatic pause — twice.’ So if I had to guess, I saw another comment about certain storylines [on] why Disney wasn’t comfortable with it, my guess was … that moment was probably one of them.

Disney had a problem with the idea of an adult Lizzie having a sexual relationship, even though she would have been in her 30s. So, Disney pulled the plug on the Lizzie McGuire reboot, and that was the end of it.

So, Lizzie McGuire fans won’t get the original cast back together for one more run. Even though the fans who would have been watching the episode would also be in their 30s, and Hilary Duff is now 36, the Disney revival isn’t happening over the suggestion of a character having sex, or at least according to Hurwitz.

We will continue to update this story at Disney Fanatic.
