Beloved Disney Cat Passes Away

Walt Disney famously encouraged us all to remember that Disney was “all started by a mouse”. And many of us know that there is one thing mice may hate above all else — cats. So, it may seem strange that a Disney Resort would have hundreds of cats running around the property. However, that is exactly the case at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. It is estimated that Disneyland Resort has almost 200 cats that roam the property, helping keep the vermin away. While most of these cats are unseen, some of them have become local celebrities that the Guests love to see when they visit.

One of the more well-known cats is Nutmeg — a gorgeous tan, long-haired cat that was frequently seen in Disney California Adventure Park. Nutmeg became known as the Magic Key Terrace cat, since that was the location he loved to hang out. Nutmeg could frequently be found sitting on the concrete wall, watching Guests enjoy their food and drinks.

Sadly, we have learned that Nutmeg has passed away.

Nutmeg lived at Disneyland Resort for years, but we don’t know exactly how old he was. Nutmeg was a staple in the area when it was still called the Alfresco Tasting Terrace. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the area was open to all Guests, who could go up there to enjoy small bites and a wonderful wine and drink list. Then, in 2020, Disney announced that the area was being redone and turned into the Magic Key Terrace. The area is now only open to Magic Key Holders — the new name for Disneyland Annual Passholders.

While the cats that roam Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, and the Downtown Disney District are all feral, Disney takes exceptionally good care of them. According to Disneyland Cast Members, the cats are spayed and neutered and receive vet checks on a regular basis. On the off-chance that one of the cats becomes pregnant, the resulting kittens are adopted out to Cast Members. Even though the cats can hunt mice and are relatively self-sufficient, Disney still makes sure that they are fed and kept safe.

While Guests will, sadly, no longer be able to see Nutmeg at Magic Key Terrace, Nutmeg’s memory can still be celebrated. Disney honored Nutmeg with a special secret menu drink item. The Nutmeg cocktail is made with Myers Dark Rum, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur, and apricot liqueur.

Rest in peace, Nutmeg. We will miss you.
